Luna Maya Joins the Waste4Change Investor Team

Waste4Change has more than 22 thousand active users and has managed more than 31 thousand tons of waste

Waste management startup Waste4Change inaugurated a strategic partnership in the form of investment with actress and entrepreneur, Luna Maya, in order to realize responsible waste management in Indonesia. It is hoped that Luna's joining the ranks of investors will encourage the synergy of the two parties for more optimal waste management.

Previous, Waste4Change and brand cosmetics BEAUTIFUL NAME owned by Luna has obtained an injection of funds from AC Ventures. The synergy between the two is expected to drive the growth of Waste4Change services in several sectors, including property development, commercial areas and tourism.

Prior to joining the ranks of investors, Luna was known to have been a client in the Waste4Change Personal Waste Management service. This service is a direct garbage collection service from home to ensure that the client's waste is transported safely, sorted and processed so that recycling is optimal and reduces the amount of waste that ends up in the TPA (Final Disposal Site).

Since its establishment in 2014, Waste4Change has focused on offering holistic waste management solutions for households and companies. Supported by technology and partnerships, the company actively offers 4 solutions, viz Consult, Campaign, Collectand Create.

The plan is that the company wants to encourage and reactivate B2C services, so that it does not only serve companies and businesses, but can also involve the role of the community individually. Waste4Change itself has a site called Send Your Waste to make it easier for individuals to recycle inorganic waste responsibly.

Based on information on its website, Waste4Change has more than 22 thousand active users and has managed more than 31 thousand tons of waste to date. Going forward, the company is targeting a significant increase in waste management to 2.000 tons per day.

Currently, Waste4Change's waste management services cover the areas of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Semarang, Bandung and Medan.

Waste management performance in Indonesia

Based on UNEP data (2017), Indonesia is known to be the largest waste producing country in ASEAN at 64 million tons per year. With the 4th highest population in the world and low public awareness to support a culture of recycling waste is a big challenge that this nation must face.

Quoting Indonesian data, Indonesia's waste management performance is said to be getting better in 2022. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) reports that the Waste Management Performance Index (IKPS) score in Indonesia is 50,25 points in 2022. This value has increased by 0,38% compared to the previous year which amounted to 50,06 points.

Apart from Waste4Change, startups that offer similar services are Recosystem, Kibumi and Octopus who have just been selected to join the accelerator program made by Google. Using a slightly different approach, Rebricks processing plastic waste into building materials.

More Coverage:

From the government side, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has also implemented a waste management scheme by developing an elaboration of basic principles reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R), namely optimizing the waste management value chain at the source by utilizing technology and improving waste processing facilities that are professionally managed and integrated.

In addition, the government is also optimizing waste processing facilities such as PLTSa, RDF, SRF, biodigester and magot for biomass waste; TPA operations specifically designated as residual waste disposal sites in 2050; and strengthening waste segregation activities at the source and utilization of waste as recycled raw materials.

February 21 every year is celebrated as National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) which reminds all parties that waste issues must be a major concern. Efforts to handle and manage waste must involve all components of society which include both Central and Regional Governments, academics, activists, communities, the business world, professional associations and even individuals.
