Dispose of Here Addressing Fundamental Issues in the Plastic Recycling Industry

Solum.id team interview with Buangdisini Co-Founder & CEO Rheza Varianto Yudhistira

The plastic waste recycling business has recently attracted more and more attention. Apart from being proven profitable, recycling plastic waste can also help preserve the environment.

This approach is widely known as the circular economy. Last February, The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) noted that Indonesia currently has around 241 plastic recycling businesses, with an investment value of 20 trillion rupiah and a production capacity of 2,54 million tons per year.

From this we can actually conclude that waste, especially plastic waste, can be treated as a valuable commodity.

Unfortunately, this only applies to a few parties. The reason is, as we know, there are still many scavengers who live below the poverty line.

That's the kind of sentiment I got after talking briefly with Rheza Varianto Yudhistira, co-founder and CEO of startup waste management Throw it away.

In his explanation, Rheza described Buangdisini as startup which offers plastic recycling services end-to-end, with a focus on the digitalization of commerce in the informal sector.

One of the players in the informal sector in question is the scavengers mentioned above. According to Rheza, status quo The current industry makes it very difficult for scavengers to earn a decent income, and that is where Buangdisini hopes to help through its digitalization efforts.

Broadly speaking, Buangdisini products can be divided into two, namely a sophisticated recycling facility located in the city of Malang, and a cellphone application that can be used by plastic waste collectors to make their work easier.

Through this application, anyone can access integrated data transparently. In the context of scavengers, for example, they can sell the plastic waste they collect at a much higher price than through intermediaries.

Since its launch in October 2022, the Buangdisini application has succeeded in attracting around 1.000 active users.
