Slogan: Definition, Characteristics and Purpose, As well as Terms of Writing

Slogans are short sentences or distinctive expressions that are interesting and easy to remember, from a person or organization.

In posters or advertisements, there must be slogans that attract readers. Slogans are short, interesting, short and easy to remember phrases to tell or explain the purpose of the activity. Slogans are meant to attract or invite people to act or refrain from acting.

Slogans contain brand elements that significantly increase the attractiveness of the product. Slogans are usually created to ask someone to do something.

Meaning of Slogan

According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), the meaning of a slogan is an interesting short sentence that is easy to remember to notify or advertise something. Slogans are also often called mottos or mottos.

Simply put, a slogan is a phrase or word that can be easily used to attract the attention of a large audience. The contents of the slogan generally describe the vision, goals and expectations of the activity, company or organization.

Arrie Widhayani, M.Pd., in the book Advanced Creative Writing of Advertising Texts, Slogans and Posters, mentions that slogan text has 2 elements, namely words and sound. So the form of the slogan can be spoken or written.

Slogans are expected to influence the views and opinions of those who read or hear them.

Characteristics and Purpose of the Slogan

The slogan element includes a causal relationship. Features of a slogan include: 

  • The words are short, catchy, and easy to remember. 
  • Presented in the form of phrases, clauses, or sentences. 
  • Is the motto of an organization or society.

The following are the goals and slogans are similar to ad text, the goals of slogans that you can usually see and feel are as follows:

  • The goal is to make people aware.
  • Its purpose is to provide certain information.
  • The goal is to convince others.
  • The goal is to influence other people.
  • The goal is to motivate others.

Slogan Writing Requirements

Quoting the New Edition Big Book in Indonesian, the requirements for writing a slogan include:

  • Fill density (brief). 
  • Conformity of the slogan with the stated goals, vision or expectations. 
  • The originality of the slogan (not imitating).
  • The beauty and attractiveness of the choice of words used.

Slogan Example

Education Slogan

Generally, many educational slogans are posted on the walls of schools or classes. Here is an example of an educational slogan:

  • Cultivate reading even if only for a moment.
  • There is no eternal treasure except knowledge.
  • A quality school, producing a generation of knowledge.
  • Smart and faithful are symbols of the young generation of the Indonesian nation.
  • Wealth does not produce knowledge, but knowledge certainly produces wealth.
  • Learn from a failure.
  • Books will only be useful if read and practiced!
  • No knowledgeable person regrets.
  • Education teaches humans across space and time.
  • No nation dares to colonize a nation of knowledge.

Product Slogan

You must already know the slogans of several well-known brands in Indonesia and other parts of the world. The slogan describes the personality, meaning and use of the product. The goal, of course, is for consumers to enjoy the products of the company or brand.

Here's an example:

  • Teh Botol Sosro – "Whatever the Food, Drink Teh Botol Sosro"
  • Reject Wind – “Smart People Drink Refuse Wind”
  • Dancow – “Me and You Like Dancow”
  • Indomie – “Indomie My Taste”
  • McDonald's – “I'm Lovin' It”
  • Nike – “Just Do It”
  • Pizza Hut – “Good Friends Great Pizza”
