7 Ways to Overcome Overthinking for a Healthier Mental Health

Overthinking is characterized by excessive thinking about a problem.

Are you one of those people who likes to think things over? Then you might be one of those people who think too much. Don't misunderstand the nature of thinkers. People with the nature of the thinker tend to think about things that really need to be thought about. At the same time, overthinkers tend to spend hours thinking about trivial things or things that might not be useful.

Thinking about something before acting is good, but doing it too often is also dangerous for you, not only your time but also your energy will run out if you do this for hours on end. So, you can prevent this habit by following the tips below.

1. Finding Out the Cause

The first way to get rid of overthinking is to find out the cause. When you get to the root of the problem, you can find solutions to address your overthinking triggers.

2. Do Something Different

This method can help you forget the thoughts in your head. For those of you who like to overthink, diverting attention is the right way. You can try new activities that have never been done before. Like joining the community where you live, going on an adventure with friends or just watching movies and cooking at home, things you rarely did before.

3. Take a deep breath

First, find a comfortable place to sit and keep your neck and shoulders as relaxed as possible. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach.

Then inhale and exhale through your nose, paying attention to the movement of your chest and abdomen as you breathe. Do this exercise for 5 minutes three times a day or whenever you have a disturbing thought.

4. Try to be open minded

Opening your mind can help you find solutions to existing problems. Look at the problem you are facing from a different perspective. Discard your negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. This not only helps you find solutions, but also forgets unnecessary thoughts.

5. Make peace with your own fears

Learning to accept your own fears can be an effective way to deal with overthinking. Study in the journal Psychological Health Benefits of Accepting Negative Emotions and Thoughts:

Laboratory, diary, and longitudinal studies show that accepting negative thoughts and fears can help improve mental health.

Of course, facing your fears is easier said than done. The process takes a long time and cannot be done in a few days. But once the fear is overcome, there is no more excessive thinking due to this condition.

6. Give Time Limits in Overcoming Decisions

Overthinking usually occurs when someone has to make a big decision. People don't want to make a mistake in their actions, so they constantly think about the right decision.

The easiest way to prevent overthinking is to limit your choices. That way you have time to think about it and when to stop thinking about it.

7. Give yourself some time

The brain and body need time to think and process the event or fear you are experiencing. So reserve about 30 minutes. During this time, write down worrying concerns in a journal.

Then take some time to find a solution. When it comes to things you can't control, like reactions or what other people say about you, try not to let it weigh on you.

That's how to deal with overthinking and if the ways to overcome overthinking above don't help, consult a psychologist to find the right solution.
