Hoodemia: a Social Media with Academic Taste

Are you bored with social media invented by Indonesians yet? Let's take a look at Hoodemia. Hoodemia is developed by Center for Computer Science (Pusilkom) University of Indonesia. It might be one of few social media site officially affiliated with education institution. What is the eminency of Hoodemia compared to Facebook or other social media sites?

Well, as predicted, Hoodemia plans to be integrated with a specific academic system. Therefore, beside having social sharing features with peers, this site can also be a reference to see academic reports or other academic activities such as class schedule at certain universities. Of course, it needs to connect (through API) to get connected to academic information system of each education institution, for example to input the access data in a form of credentials.

From the appearance we can see that Hoodemia is not that special, not to mention there are some broken links on the website. By now, Hoodemia is still in public beta stage and is open for public to register. However, if you are not affiliated with any academic institution, Hoodemia will practically work just like other social media sites, so that makes no difference.

Hoodemia has an eminence in its integration to the academic system, therefore I think that Hoodemia is better to adopt Facebook used to grow their userbase which was by limiting the access based on the email registered. Those who have email @harvard.edu have been ascertained as the Harvard University academic members who are able to access the Harvard academic system.

For Hoodemia, for example, you need to register with the official email address you get from the University of Indonesia if you want to access the Universitas Indonesia network and access the academic system. Surely it won't work for sharing and other social features. In fact, there are no limitations for communicating and having acquaintance with people from other schools / universities.

Actually Hoodemia has considered the future plan and promised to make this system available on mobile app and on BlackBerry, Android, and iOS platforms. If you want to know more about Hoodemia, you can first read their FAQ page. You can also go directly and try to use the new social media site and give your thoughts via the comment box.
