DSInnovate Report: Startup Report 2020

Discussing the development of the digital ecosystem during the pandemic, startup funding, to business trends in the coming year

Several research findings validate the magnitude and potential of Indonesia's digital economy. Technological democratization in the commerce, travel, media & entertainment, education, and health sectors provides the largest contribution measured by the turnover of the resulting economic value. While the startup ecosystem is the main driver -- it includes startup actors, investors, regulators, and others stakeholder others specifically involved.

The Startup Report is prepared to see how the startup ecosystem in Indonesia develops every year. This year DSInnovate carry the theme "Business Resiliency during the Pandemic", considering that the last year the Covid-19 pandemic is testing the resilience of society and giving birth to new trends among consumers. While exploring whether the digitalization produced by startups can be one of the pillars of this survival.

There are four main topics discussed in the 2020 Startup Report, including:

  1. Digital ecosystem during a pandemic. Here the researcher highlights how the condition of consumers and digital businesses during 2020; as well as anticipatory steps taken by every business sector in dealing with the pandemic.
  2. Startup trends in Indonesia. This chapter discusses the development of digital startups during 2020, including the new business models that thrived throughout the year, the applications with the best traction, and startup funding trends.
  3. Strategy "exit". View a list of corporate actions in to merge and / or acquisition involving digital startups. Also the IPO initiative that took place throughout 2020.
  4. Trends ahead. Summarizes several trends that may occur in the following year based on the strategic plans that have been announced by stakeholder ecosystem throughout the year.

From the four discussions, there were many interesting trends that were revealed. One of them, in 2020 Indonesia already has 43 startups at the national level centaur, they are companies with a valuation of over $100 million and have the potential to become unicorn next. Its distribution extends across various business verticals ranging from fintech, e-commerce, logistics, new retail, SaaS, OTAs, agritech, healthtech, coworking, edtech, insurtech, and online media.
