Facebook reportedly launching webmail soon

Monday next week Facebook officially invited several media to come to an announcement of Facebook products. Speculation and rumors are circulating that Facebook will release Project Titan, which is a webmail feature that is rumored to be the Gmail killer. Indeed, Facebook has not confirmed this, but it seems that the rumors are getting louder and louder.

And now AOL has also announced that they will be releasing an update AOL Mail next Sunday, the day before the announcement from Facebook. The AOL Mail project, also known as Project Phoenix, currently has more than 30 million users and plans to continue to add features to compete with GMail.

These two announcements almost simultaneously prove that email is still the main preference for communication, even in some areas an email address is as important as a cellphone number as a point of contact. Take, for example, services such as Posterous who stake their core service on email, and are proving to be successful. Email will always be alive, and better messaging features on Facebook better be made more serious.

This FbMail will really be like a fully functional webmail like GMail or YahooMail, but of course integration into Facebook will certainly be the main factor that will attract users. Although many say that FbMail will be able to beat GMail, I think it will still take a while for FbMail to catch up with Gmail and all its features.

Not to mention the privacy issues that have not been fully resolved by Facebook, a social networking service that does not respect the privacy of its users, of course, will face difficulties when releasing an email service that in fact requires high trust to facilitate user activities.

With the privacy issues plaguing Facebook, would you like to give FbMail a try?
