Tips for Preparing to Become a Startup Leader in the style of Hadi Wenas

Starting from setting priorities, finding identity to implementing a "work-life balance"

TuesdayStartup the first edition of 2020 is quite special. Hadi Wenas was present as a speaker, telling his experience while leading a digital business in Indonesia. Since May 2019 he has served as COO Amartha, with track record leadership in Zalora, aCommerce, to Mataharimall.

In his presentation, Wenas highlighted many important aspects, as the basis for leading a digital business. Here's the review:

Setting priorities

According to Wenas, one of the crucial jobs in startup leadership is determining job priorities. This includes the process of understanding issues, finding solutions and performing calculations for each briefing that will be given to his team.

For Wenas, a quick way to determine priorities is to execute the work that has been assigned to him as soon as possible. After running, you will see the process and progress.

"The point is to just get to work and in the end the appropriate priority or order will soon be seen. Don't think too long planning, just start working," said Wenas.

Do not be afraid to fail

Failure, of course, often haunts all startup founders. Is it when you start building a startup until the startup has been running for 2-3 years. When a startup ultimately fails, it's a good idea not to beat yourself up.

According to Wenas, the luck factor is sometimes the key to the success or failure of a business. If the business goes well, according to him, the luck factor could be one of the causes. For that, when you fail, do introspection and start looking for inspiration to how to start again with a new business or venture.

When Wenas was entrusted to serve as CEO of MatahariMall, his team had a tough task to complete. For this reason, it is important for the leader to be able to identify the personality of himself and his team first, so that when the workload begins to be felt, all the challenges and problems faced can be completely resolved.

Find yourself

Another important point that was later conveyed by Wenas was finding one's identity. As a introverted, he sometimes finds it difficult to socialize, but on the other hand this trait makes him more organized and thirsty for detail. The impatient nature that was previously an obstacle is now considered a trait that supports Wenas' performance, because all work can be completed quickly and helps the team to work even better.

"For me, who is a introverted actually like everything in order. Thus all the problems and the right way to overcome them can be easily resolved in stages. Automatically if the work rhythm has been found, the work will be completed faster," said Wenas.

Meditation supports productivity

One of the habits that Wenas have carried out since 2008 is to regularly meditate. Although at first it was more about the healing process of the body, the meditation that he does regularly is now able to train patience to increase work productivity. The point is to find work-life balance, which will have a positive influence on body health and career.

"Meditation can help me practice patience and find that balance. Are you a introverts, extroverts, likes to do regularly or care about details. If that identity has been found, in the end all work will be completed more relaxed and of course easier," concluded Wenas.
