Wikipedia Fundraiser Reaches 16 Million Dollars To Keep Service Ad-Free

Earlier this new year news emerged from the Wikimedia Foundation which is the central organization for services such as Wikipedia, Wikitionary, Wikibooks and various other services that are still in one organization.

The Wikimedia Foundation has successfully raised funds to support their operations for $16 million. This fund was obtained from the support of more than 500.000 individuals who donated money to the non-profit foundation.

From their official explanation, this fundraiser to cover operational costs in 2011 was the shortest successful fundraiser in Wikimedia's fundraising history. In just 50 days, on average, donations were made of $22 from each individual, spread across 140 countries, more than the number of individuals who participated in the 2009 fundraiser of 230.000 donors.

For those who are looking for content and sources of reference or information on the internet, Wikipedia is a reliable source of data. I think changes are also happening from the perspective of internet users, including academics, about Wikipedia. I still remember that in the past it was forbidden to include reference sources from Wikipedia as forbidden in quotation marks, even though references cannot only come from one source and references in physical text are still recommended, but the role of Wikipedia can no longer be eliminated in today's internet world. contributors as well as a given content contribution system as well keep improving.

As a content collaboration site that is overseen by around 400.000 people, the truth and information contained in it are also getting better monitored. As Jimmy Wales said, founder from Wikipedia,"Wikipedia is a public resource created and maintained by hundreds of thousands of volunteers, relied on by over 400 million people and paid for by half a million donors. It's truly user-created, supported and maintained."

Withclosing of the 2010 fundraiser, Wikipedia, which is mentioned as fifth most visited website in the world which is free of ads and funded by its users and readers, will enter its tenth anniversary celebration on January 15, 2011, and will provide t-shirt Customized special edition Wikipedia in 200 languages, available with a minimum donation of $25 until midnight January 15, 2011 (UTC).

The $16 million raised will be used to pay for the technology costs needed to keep Wikimedia sites up and running for everyone, then to support programs that make Wikipedia easier to use, as well as programs to get more people involved. participate and contribute, and of course to keep Wikipedia ad-free.

As a Wikipedia user (not only because my alias is wikupedia :D) this is good news, apart from being one of the largest examples of collaboration sites, Wikipedia has helped many people, including myself, maybe not as the main source in finding data, but Wikipedia has be kind of pintu initial for information seekers as a place to get reference material in completing data.
