Netflix History

Headquartered in Los Gatos, California. Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hasting and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California. At first, Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph got the idea to rent out DVDs by mail.

They tested this concept by sending themselves a DVD. The DVD was received in its entirety, and the idea for founding Netflix was born.

In 1998, Netflix was first launched as a DVD rental and sales site. One year later, Netflix debuted and offers its members unlimited DVD rentals, with no time limits, late fees, or monthly rental time limits.

In 2002, for the first time Netflix made an initial public offering (IPO) at a selling price of $1 per share on the NASDAQ under the ticker NFLX. Who would have thought, in the following year Netflix has up to 1 million members.

This resulted in Netflix obtaining a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office to provide subscription rental services. Netflix continues to grow, in 2006, Netflix membership continued to grow to reach 5 million members.

In 2007, Netflix finally launched a new feature in the form of a streaming service that allows its members to be able to watch TV shows and movies directly on their personal computers.
