Ever Heard of the term Mind Mapping? This is the explanation

The ability to organize ideas is the most important skill that must be possessed by students and workers, one technique that can be used to improve these skills is to use mind mapping.

What is Mind Mapping?

Mind mapping or what we are more familiar with as mind mapping is a method to maximize the potential of the human mind by using the right brain and left brain simultaneously. This mind mapping technique uses a visual description which is believed to be more effective than using a list of materials.

Mind mapping develops divergent thinking and creative thinking. Mind mapping is a powerful organizational thinking tool that is also the easiest way to put information into the brain and retrieve that information when needed. In short, mind mapping is a new way to record ideas or ideas that you have.

In addition, mind mapping has principles and characteristics, namely using the technique of channeling ideas by using free keywords, symbols, images, and describing them in a unified way using the tree technique. Mind mapping is based on the details of a mind map that is easy to remember because it follows the brain's thought patterns.

As mentioned earlier, the benefit of mind mapping is that it makes your learning activities more effective. However, there are several other benefits of mind mapping that you can feel, namely:

  1. Make difficult material easier to understand and master.
  2. Improve the ability to remember things more fully and in detail.
  3. Improve the ability of information management, concentration, imagination and memory.
  4. Make learning activities more fun and save time.
  5. Can be used as a learning method, idea development, or problem solving.
  6. Increase creativity and productivity.

A Brief History of Mind Mapping

The mand mapping method was first introduced by a British human potential development expert named Tony Buzan in 1974. The mind mapping proposed by Buza is based on the fact that the human brain consists of one million brain cells, equivalent to 167 times the number of humans on earth, brain cells consist of several parts, there is a central part (nucleus) and there are a number of branches that radiate in all directions, so it looks like a tree growing branches all around.

Currently, mind mapping is widely known in various fields of human resource development (HR). Its application includes organizational management, writing, learning, self-development, and others.

Types of Mind Mapping

  1. Mind Map Chapter

A chapter mind map is a type of mind mapping that is made based on a series of chapters that have been done or studied. This type of mind mapping is made by summarizing various important points or core points to make it easier to remember.

  1. Mind Map Syllabus

A syllabus mind map or also known as a macro mind mapping is a type of mind mapping that supports and accepts an image related to what has been done.

Generally, this type of mind mapping is arranged in a large size and pasted on the wall. This type of mind mapping is used to help provide an overview of what has been learned.

  1. Mind Map Paragraphs

The last type possessed by mind mapping is a mind map paragraph. Mind map paragraph is a type of mind mapping that is able to provide complete and detailed information. This type of mind mapping allows us to see various summaries of each chapter.

Easy Steps to Make a Mind Map

  1. Enter the Main Topic. Start by entering the main subject in the middle of the mind map, for example "Capital of the world".
  2. Create a main branch to include your topics such as "London", "Paris", "New York" and "Beijing". Don't worry about the order of the topics.
  3. Create Sub-topics. Describe your topic by creating sub-topics. Be sure to use very short phrases or even single words.
  4. Reset Topic. If you need to rearrange topics in your mind map, most software will allow you to drag and drop branches. This will allow you to structure the topics you are brainstorming on.
  5. Add Images and Formatting. According to mind mapping theory, images and colors enhance memory retention. You can use different colors and fonts and place images in the branches you have created.
  6. Notes and Research. Take note of your topic and attached research file - if your mind mapping software allows you to do so.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Mind Mapping

Advantages of mind mapping:

  1. Help our brain to be able to organize, remember, compare and make connections.
  2. Makes it easier for us to get additional new information.
  3. Recall what has been learned more quickly,
  4. Help us to be able to see the overall picture of the material.
  5. Each mind map map has unique properties.
  6. Activates all parts of the brain
  7. Increase creativity and individual and group activities.
