Always Appearing on the Internet, What is a Domain?

What is a domain and why do people often mention domain names for business? website and blogs?

Domain is a unique name given to identify the name server Komputer like a web server or server e-mail on a computer network or the internet.

Basically, a domain is an easy-to-remember name associated with a physical IP address on the internet. Usually, the domain name is usually located after the "@" sign in the address Email and after www. at the web address. Examples of domain names that we often visit or even encounter are google.com and wikipedia.org.

Domains are often also referred to as urls or web addresses. Domains have a function to make it easier for users on the internet when accessing the server.

Also, Web addresses will be easier to remember and type if you use a domain name to identify your location on Internet, as opposed to using a complex numeric IP address.

Reporting from the Google support page, anyone can buy or own a domain. Then, to own it, you just need to open a registrar (company that sells domain names that are not owned yet) or a domain host.

Furthermore, to register a domain, you must also choose a unique name that is not used by anyone else. This is because one domain name cannot be the same as another domain name. Then, the domain name can be rented by paying a regular annual fee.

Domain name basics

When you are managing an internet domain name, there are some general terms that you should know, namely:

  1. Domain name

As explained above, a domain name is an easy-to-remember name associated with a physical IP address on the internet.

  1. Subdomain

The 2nd term you should know is Subdomain. A subdomain is part of a larger domain. Domain owners can create subdomains to provide internet users with easy-to-remember addresses for web pages or services in the top-level domain.

Examples are subdomains of the google.com domain, namely: www.google.com, docs.google.com, and mail.google.com.

  1. Domain without www

Is a term used for domain addresses that do not have a "www" prefix such as google.com (doesn't use the www prefix).

  1. Primary domain

When you register your organization for a Google Cloud product such as Google Workspace, enter the domain name you want to use with the service. This name will be the primary domain associated with your account. The name must also be a domain you already own, or you can purchase a domain during the registration process.

  1. Secondary domain

A secondary domain is an additional domain that you assign to an account so that users in that domain can use the service. Keep in mind that the secondary domain is completely dependent on the primary domain. Deletion or suspension of the primary domain will also have an impact on the secondary domain.

 6. Domain aliases

A domain alias is a term used for a domain name that functions as an alias for another domain. You can add a domain to your account as a domain alias to give everyone else in your domain another email address in the domain alias. Emails sent to any user's address will be received in the user's same email inbox.

  1. IP Address

An IP address or the abbreviation for Internet Protocol is a string of numbers that identifies the physical location of a particular device on the Internet network. Examples are: 74. 125. 19. 147

  1. Domain registrar

A domain registrar is a company that sells domain names that are not owned and, therefore, available for registration. You can register a domain through Google Domains (beta) , in addition Google also offers registration through a domain host partner.

  1. Domain host

A domain host is a company that manages the DNS servers for your domain and manages its DNS records. DNS records consist of MX records for setting up Gmail (if you use Google Workspace), CNAME records for creating web addresses, as well as other records. In addition, most domain hosts also offer domain name registration.

  1. Nameservers

Name servers serve as reference points for your domain's DNS records and are usually managed by the domain host company. Each name server must return identical records for your domain.

If name servers fail, email delivery may be delayed or your website unavailable, so you should have at least two physically separate name servers to minimize failure or errors.

  1. WHOIS . Directory

The WHOIS directory is the last term in the domain. The WHOIS directory is a public list of domain names and the people or organizations associated with each domain name. You can use this WHOIS directory to determine the owner of a domain name and IP address.

There are many free web-based directories available on the Internet. Information available in the WHOIS directory includes mailing addresses and telephone numbers.

Domain types

Basically, the domain is divided into 3 types, namely:

Top Level Domains

Top level domain is the domain name that is most often used and is the initial structure and the highest type of domain in the DNS structure on the internet. This type is a type of domain that is quite popular among internet users today.

Some TLDs that are often used by many people include .com, .id, .org, .net and so on. This type of domain also does not refer to a particular organization, meaning that it is free to be used by personal sites. TLD is then further divided into 3 types, namely:

  • Country Code Top Level Domains (CCTLD) = Domain type based on the geographic naming of a country. For example, .id is used for domain names in Indonesia, .sg is used for domain names in Singapore, .us is used for domain names in the United States.
  • Generic Top Level Domain (GTLD) = Is a common type of domain that is often used in the world. GTLD can be used for personal use and also for public facility website domains. For example .com is used for commercial purposes, .net is used for internet purposes, .org is used for organizational purposes.
  • New Generic Top Level Domain (NgTLD) = This type is still relatively new for the Top Level Domain type. This type of domain is general or general. for example .tech is used for website purposes with technology and education topics.
  • Top Level Domain Indonesia = Indonesia also has a TLD that can be used by official domestic institutions. As a result, this type of TLD belonging to Indonesia should not be used arbitrarily for personal gain. An example of an Indonesian TLD is .ac.id which is used for academic or college environments.

Second Level Domains

SLD is a type of domain that is part of the domain name that you have registered. An example is www.trikinet.id. So the word "trikinet" is what will become his second level domain.

Third Level Domains

A third level domain or what we also know as a subdomain is a type of domain that is used for certain purposes. For example, www.trikinet.id has a subdomain such as blog.trikinet.id which is used for the benefit of the company to publish news, activities and important information about the company.
