What's Great About A Monitor? Interview with GTiD

Among Indonesian tech YouTubers, GTiD seems unique because of its less common niche

For those who follow a lot channel tech on YouTube like me, you must be aware that every channel actually have a specialization or nicheeach. Most probably put extra focus on categories like smartphone or laptop, but there are also others who try to offer something different by discussing specific topics that may not be so popular because they are less interesting to talk about at length.

Among local YouTubers, one of the channel that fall into that category are GTiD. at a glance channel this might sound like gadget channel in general, but if you observe, the majority of the videos he uploads are about monitors. Not infrequently the discussion is even quite long with a duration of more than 10 minutes. In fact, for some people, the monitor may not be that interesting to discuss in depth.

I also initially had the same view. But in fact, until this article was written, GTiD already has almost 70 thousand subscriber. GTiD also already has the Discord community himself who is quite active, and all of this in my opinion can illustrate that out there apparently not a few are interested in the discussion a fondo regarding monitors.

Since I'm still curious, I decided to contact host at the same time the initiator channel GTiD, Eldwin, for a quick chat. The following are the results of our conversation, most of which have been edited for clarity.

Why niche monitors? Can you tell me at first why GTiD focused on discussing monitors?

At first it was just a fad to try, and it turns out that there is a market that has not been focused on market YouTube, and it continues to this day.

Not many tech An Indonesian YouTuber who specifically discusses monitors in as much detail as GTiD. What's really interesting about the monitor?

As I said before, precisely because no one was doing it, I tried to fill the void as best I could. And just like statement In this question, at first I myself also felt that the monitor segment was less interesting. But after I studied and studied, it turns out that there is one thing that can make monitors even more important in the future for everyone, namely the presence of USB-C.

I believe in the future we will have enough smartphone and connect it to the monitor via USB-C, then we can use it like personal computer us all this time. On the other hand, we have also felt the importance of monitoring when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and we have to WFH. In order for WFH to run comfortably, we certainly need a monitor.

According to Eldwin, why do consumers need to listen to detailed reviews about a monitor?

Many marketing team brand monitors that do not explain in detail the pluses and minuses of their monitors. Some may not even know, but even if they do, they are bound by corporate ethics, so it is impossible for them to point out the weaknesses of their own products.

Not to mention the many misconceptions about monitors on the market. This is where GTiD is here to help viewers get the best monitor according to their individual needs.

What exactly are the misconceptions about monitors that are commonly circulated among consumers?

  • Color gamut high means that the resulting color is accurate, even though they actually have different meanings.
  • motion blur claimed by brand the monitor is considered correct, when in fact it is only a number that cannot describe the actual situation.
  • "The human eye can only see 60 Hz, there's no point going higher than that", or "144 Hz and 240 Hz make no difference." I have given a long explanation at video lesson review ASUS monitor PG259QN.

Gimmicks What monitors does Eldwin dislike?

  • what i see, brand I like to promote that it's as if the "Pantone validated" or "Callman certified" labels are great for a professional monitor. In reality, those monitors may not be that perfect. Sometimes the color payoff can even be beat by the monitor Gaming which is sold at a lower price.
  • motion blur a panel often misleading way of delivery. 1 ms on the TN panel is different from 1 ms on the VA panel, so is 1 ms on the IPS panel. Sometimes even the writing of the number means nothing at all because it doesn't explain anything about what actually happened.

Apart from size and resolution, what other attributes should consumers pay attention to when buying a monitor, whether for a gaming monitor or a professional monitor?

For monitors Gaming:

  • Panel type
  • motion blur
  • Refresh rate

For professional monitors:

  • Panel bit-depth
  • Color accuracy
  • Color gamut
  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • white point

Listit is still longer for professional monitors, but the following factors are more inclined to the preferences of each consumer, such as the presence or absence of VESA mount, port USB-C, factory-calibrated or not, body design, and so on.

What is the ideal monitor criteria for Eldwin? Monitor Gaming how? How about professional monitors?

The criteria below are sufficient, but cannot be said to be perfect because the sultans can actually buy even better ones:

  • For gamer competitive: 25 inch, FHD, 240/360 Hz
  • For casual gamer who often plays with his friends: 27 inches, QHD, 144 Hz
  • For single-player gamer or content creator: 4K, 60 Hz
  • For professional editors: monitor specifications follow how professional each user is, with budget which may be unlimited, starting with Apple Pro XDR

Apart from monitors, Eldwin occasionally also reviews more common gadgets such as laptops, mice, keyboards, etc. / Photo source: GTiD personal documentation

Apart from of course the different types of graphics cards supported, are there any other differences between Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync?

For me, both technologies have the same goal, which is to eliminate tearing while playing game. On the row casual games who are generally more concerned with image quality with preset High, Ultra graphics, and so on, this feature might be able to help maximize that beauty. It's not good if for example the quality of the graphics is good, but suddenly there is one frame which seems to be cut across the screen.

On the other hand, if the context in question is game pro player PC, many of them do not recommend turning on this feature because there is a risk of increased latency mouse and keyboard, which in the end can make us lose one step compared to the opponent. And again when playing at fps (frames per second) is very high, tearing also barely felt.

Eldwin's opinion on Nvidia Reflex? Are the tech trends on the right track?

Nvidia Reflex is cool. The concept is clear and indeed the aim is to help the gamer. But I don't think it's very relevant for the Indonesian market at this time. Indonesian people need internet that is stable and low latency provider internet, which so far has not been evenly distributed in Indonesia.

According to Eldwin, what is the current condition of the monitor market in Indonesia? Is there one or two brand who dominates, or is the competition fairly even?

Definitely not as tight as in the market smartphone. The competition is also still uneven, and a lot brand which is still selling at a very high price, exceeding value of the product itself, due to lack of competition.

According to Eldwin, what is the reason for naming monitor models that always seem inconsequential?

I think they just want to be different compared to brand other. Because I want to be different, sometimes it seems very inconsequential when giving the code. One example is the ViewSonic VX2705-2KP-MHD (27 inch, QHD, 144 Hz). If you look at the specifications, it could actually be made simpler, such as the VX2705-2K.

Can you tell me what it's like and what it's like to be a Reviewer monitors?

Like:

  • It helped a lot, and I got lots of positive DMs about them being able to buy the best monitor they needed.
  • Reviewit is not as complicated as other electronic products, because the function of the monitor is only one, namely as a of something connected as input.

Grief:

  • Sometimes the amount view not as many people have commented on smartphone.
  • And that has an impact on income from YouTube which is not too big.

Honestly, I like Eldwin's frontal style of delivery. So far, has anyone ever protested with Eldwin's style?

From side brand, there was a time when someone came to our team and conveyed directly that the point was that our team had beenblacklist by them. It is also possible that weblacklist secretly by a number of brand who doesn't like style review we.

For me it's not a problem, because the goal of GTiD itself is to be independent without being dependent on brand certain. I don't know if we can achieve it or not, but for sure I want to keep giving value to the audience who have been loyal to provide support from the start.

To the new viewers, I hope that every time they watch review GTiD, they can think of me as a friend who cares about their money. The reason is that the items we review It's not a cheap thing, and there are probably people out there who've been saving for a long time to get their hands on it. If I'm not honest about the product's flaws, I'm sure they will be very disappointed.

Maybe not many people can accept it in style review I am expressive. But I don't want to change that because that's the real me in the real world, in the exact same fashion when a friend asks for advice on an item they want to buy.
