Understanding the ins and outs of "Review": Definition, Structure, and Examples

In the world of literacy and art, the term "reviewer" often appears. A review is an assessment, review, or criticism made of a work, such as a book, film, exhibition, product, and so on. Reviewers, or what are known as recensors, provide their personal views regarding the work, both its strengths and weaknesses. Through this article, we will explore more deeply about reviews, covering the structure and some examples of reviews.

Before we get into examples and how to write reviews, it's a good idea to first understand the basic structure of a review. In general, the review structure consists of three main parts: introduction, body, and closing.

Introduction

This is the first part of the review, where the author provides basic information about the work to be reviewed. This information can be in the form of the title of the work, the name of the author or creator of the work, the year of publication or release, and a brief context of the work.

Isi

This section is the heart of the review, where the author provides reviews, ratings, and criticisms of the work being reviewed. This section must be written with objectivity and honesty, but still maintain ethics and courtesy in giving criticism.

Closing Event

This is the last part of the review, where the author provides a conclusion or summary of the reviews that have been written before. Also in this section, the author usually provides recommendations as to whether the work is worthy of being watched, read, or consumed by the public.

After understanding the basic structure of a review, we will then try to look at some examples of reviews. The following are examples of reviews for books and films.

Example of a review for a book:
"The book 'Bumi Manusia', written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, presents Indonesian history in a captivating literary form. Through its main character, Minke, the author manages to describe the nation's history in an intelligent and emotional way. Although there are some parts that are quite complex and require deep understanding , but overall this book is worth reading to deepen our historical insight."

Example review for the film:
"The film 'Parasite' directed by Bong Joon Ho offers an unusual story, filled with various surprises. Even though there are some scenes that might disturb some viewers, this film is highly recommended for viewing. Not only because of the storyline and the stunning appearance of the actors, but also because of the message of social criticism conveyed through this film."

The review is a bridge that connects the work with the audience. Apart from helping readers or viewers in making choices, reviews also serve as a medium for appreciation and constructive criticism which can encourage the improvement of the quality of works in the future. So, for those of you who want to try making a review, don't hesitate to start trying. Happy writing!
