Towards the Indonesian Revolution 4.0 Through the IoT Innovation Center

Telkomsel The Innovation Center hopes to create a more collaborative IoT ecosystem

The Minister of Industry, Airlangga Hartanto opened his remarks at the event Telkomsel Innovation Center (TINC) Conference & Exhibition at Balai Kartini Wednesday (25/7), through a presentation entitled "Making Indonesia 4.0". A vision for the future of the government to realize the industrial digital revolution 4.0.

In the presentation, he mentioned that industry 4.0 could be a enablers to encourage the progress of the nation and increase Indonesia's competitiveness in the global arena. "Our nation is the largest country in Asia and our demographics are broad. Technology can be enablers so that our country is more developed," he said.

Therefore, continued Airlangga, the government invites every stakeholder related to participate in encouraging the development and ecosystem of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Indonesia as a pillar of industry 4.0.

One of them is through Telkomsel Innovation Center (TINC) which is an effort Telkomsel to focus on the IoT industry. TINC is a series of programs that will bring together startups, developer, to investors in the IoT industry.

This program summarizes various activities to form the IoT ecosystem in Indonesia. Some of them are IoT laboratory facilities, mentoring and bootcamp, until access networking for startups, developer, as well system integrator with related businesses.

Not only that, this Telkom subsidiary also introduced the first Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) Lab in Indonesia which TINC innovators can use to test the IoT products they develop. This lab is located in Bandung, West Java.

President Director Telkomsel, Ririek Adriansyah said the push to strengthen his commitment in the IoT realm arose because there were so many unique problems that occurred in Indonesia and could not be solved by relying on outside assistance. He assessed that Indonesia must develop its own IoT ecosystem.

"The implementation of IoT applications is very broad. To limit imagination, so we must (make it happen) through collaboration. We can encourage the development of IoT more broadly, not only for business actors but also for the country," said Ririek in his speech.

Ririek hopes that in the next few years he can pocket 1 billion IoT product customers. For now, Telkomsel more focused on providing solutions for daily activities.

It is also hoped that TINC can again give birth to more IoT solutions and other collaborations with innovators. Several IoT services that have passed the incubation period include collaboration with Banopolis (bike sharing at the University of Indonesia) and collaboration with eFishery (automatic fish feeder).

5G optimizes IoT adoption

Apart from embracing multi stakeholder to form an ecosystem Telkomsel will also build 5G networks in the future to strengthen IoT adoption even more massively. Currently, this 5th generation cellular technology is not yet commercialized in the world, but will be tested in a number of countries, including Indonesia.

In his presentation, Director Planning & Transformation TelkomselEdward Ying said that the use of IoT will be more optimal by relying on 5G connections because the network is able to deliver speeds 100 times higher than 4G with low latency.

"5G is good for major improvement because it has high speed and is more efficient. We believe this can create tools most powerful for the telecommunications industry in the future. Ecosystem can support many things, like smart city, said Ying.

It will also increase LTE network coverage with NB-IoT in a number of areas in 2019. Currently, the network Telkomsel has supported as many as 167 BTS units with 80 percent of which are BTS on the 4G network.

IoT Forum as a catalyst

In 2020, according to Cisco research, it is predicted that there will be 7,6 billion people who use as many as 50 billion devices connected to the internet.

Meanwhile, McKinsey research estimates that the IoT market potential in Indonesia will reach $3 billion by 2020. Of this value, there are four categories that will dominate the IoT market in Indonesia, namely vehicles, industry, smart city, and retail.

Behind such a large market potential, there are still a number of things that hinder the growth of the IoT industry in Indonesia. In fact, the IoT ecosystem in Indonesia is considered to be starting to develop and is quite ready to face global IoT trends.

"The economy will work if there is one" demand and supply. We become the catalyst so that we can move the parties supply. However, not necessarily parties demand know this product exists. Therefore, both parties must be brought together in one community," said the Founder of the Indonesia IoT Forum, Teguh Prasetya on the same occasion.

Teguh assesses that the IoT Forum plays an important role in meeting and recognizing needs with end users. That way, network users and device manufacturers can connect to each other to determine who creates the service.

Meanwhile, the CEO of eFishery, Gibran Huzaifah actually assessed that one of the obstacles to the IoT industry in Indonesia is the lack of relevance use case applied to the problems faced in Indonesia. Examples are products smart home. Though, the need smart home in Indonesia is not too big.

"Relevance to use case That's important because not everything developed in the west is related to the problems that exist in Indonesia. The point is, the west doesn't necessarily understand the problems that exist here," said Gibran who was also a speaker at the TINC Conference & Exhibition.

At eFishery, Gibran applies use case based on things that happen in the cultivation of fish farmers, namely the provision of fish food. He then created an automatic fish feeding machine.
