The Ups and Downs of a Tech YouTuber: A Short Talk with Joshua Timothy

Instead of feeling insecure and losing self-confidence, it's better to just focus on yourself

The definition of YouTube for a content creator is not always the same. There are creators who have fully considered YouTube to be platform to earn a living, some are just treating it as a place to channel their hobbies.

One of the most popular reasons that come from someone who decides to become full-time YouTuber is so that he can focus more on being creative, so that in the end the quality of the content produced is better. But not infrequently this is also used as a self-defense, where when a YouTuber feels that he has not been successful, the reason is because he has not been able to decide to full-time and focus entirely on YouTube.

But have you ever thought that the focus can actually come by itself as long as we do what we love? That's the kind of sentiment I got after having a short chat with Joshua Timothy, tech A local YouTuber who has recently become quite popular.

Youth introverted who is more often called Ocha and idolizes PewDiePie, this is one example of a creator who consistently produces interesting content without having to leave his main job. When not making YouTube videos, Ocha is a professional photographer for a social media agency.

The topic of discussion raised on channelit's quite varied, ranging from hobbies in the world mechanical keyboard; review smartphone, headphone, and various gadgets other; to tips on assembling a PC as well as setting up a work desk, and of course photography and videography tips.

Here is the result of our chat that has been edited for clarity.

In Ocha's current position, is it possible to make YouTube a job full-time?

For now it's still not possible, and I also have no thoughts of making YouTube a job full-time. Because, apart from reviewing gadgets, I also really appreciate work as a photographer and still don't want to give it up.

I also still don't think of YouTube as a job or a responsibility that I have to do, but rather as a small community where I can sharing my experience regarding gadgets and lifestyle what I like in my life.

When did Ocha realize that prospects on YouTube were good and decided to start focusing more?

Actually I've been aware of it since before I started YouTube, it's just that I've never done it. When the pandemic hit, then I realized this might be worth a try because there happens to be a lot of free time during the day at home.

Fortunately, I really like the activity, so I don't need to focus on it because it will automatically focus on itself when I do what I enjoy.

Are there any local YouTubers who inspire Ocha? If so, who?

Although I am more exposed to YouTubers from outside Indonesia, but after trying YouTube myself, I began to see that there are many local YouTubers who are very talented and inspiring. One of them is Malvin from Bestindotech, which is one of the reasons why channel My YouTube could be like this.

Malvin often helps me to increase my exposure out there. Even though I'm still a very small YouTuber, he still wants to help me. One day I hope I can be like him too, where I can help other YouTubers who are just starting out to increase their exposure, just like Malvin did for me.

If you don't mind, can you give an idea of the percentage of revenue earned from YouTube?

AdSense 46%, affiliate 34%, and sponsorship 20%.

Can you tell us about your experience in finding video sponsors? Is Ocha the approach alone, or vice versa, brand who makes direct offers?

So far, most of brand-was the one who looked for me and made an offer sponsorship, either through Email or DM Instagram, and I feel so lucky to be there brand-brand out there who want to work with me and believe in the work I do.

Before I started YouTube, I never thought it would exist brand who want to work with me, so I'm very grateful.

Some viewers already think of Ocha as a gadget reviewer. Can tell how Ocha balances between providing honest reviews to the audience, and 'fun' brand?

I don't know if I qualify as Reviewer. I feel more like a person who only sharing experience using the item or product. So if you pay attention, most of my videos don't talk about the specifications in detail, but rather user experienceonly.

I will also always be honest with my experience, both for products from a company brand or products that I bought myself. If I don't like a product, or if my experience with using the product is unsatisfactory, I'll just say it as it is.

Apart from YouTube, is there platform What other social media does Ocha use that have been able to generate income so far?

So far it's still not there, but someday want to try Twitch for content live game, so that all of you can interact with the audience directly live. I feel that it can also be a fun thing for the audience.

As a photographer and YouTuber, how dependent is Ocha on the Adobe app ecosystem?

Yes, that's right, without Adobe I can't seem to do anything. I've gotten too comfortable with the Adobe ecosystem even though it's not perfect (often crash etc.), but so far Adobe is the one that has allowed me to work in the field of photography and YouTube.

If Adobe suddenly went bankrupt and all of its products disappeared, for mobile devices to report the What alternatives will Ocha use, and why?

I'm so comfortable with the Adobe ecosystem, I've never looked around again for mobile devices to report the another alternative. Maybe in video editing there's Final Cut Pro from Apple, or also DaVinci Resolve, but unfortunately I've never tried using it for mobile devices to report the-for mobile devices to report the The.

Can you tell me what it's like to be a sad person? tech YouTubers?

For me personally, the only complaint is the division of time between main work, YouTube, and personal. So far I can only provide new content once a week, or a maximum of twice a week, whereas many tech Another YouTuber who can upload four to five videos a week.

But I always try not to compare myself to others and keep going at my own pace. Although basically humans will always compare each other, but I will always try not to be like that. I am indeed quite a competitive person, and I understand that if I always compare myself to others, then I will feel insecure and lose confidence.

In the world of content creation like YouTube, where there are thousands of people doing the same thing as me, sometimes it's hard not to compare yourself to others. But I always remind myself that nothing good can come of it, and to just focus on myself.
