Summary of the discussion session with Ernest Layman as CEO of Rekosistem on #TuesdayStartup

-based start-up impact increasingly found in the community. One of which is Recosystem, startups cleantech which offers waste management services, including collection, sorting, and recycling.

Starting as an MSME until finally establishing its own legal entity and company brand, this startup founded by Ernest Layman and Joshua Valentino in 2019 provides innovative products and services to solve waste management problems in Indonesia.

In accordance with the theme of last week's #TuesdayStartup discussion, regarding sustainable impact business, Ernest revealed that the business model that sustainable according to him not only thinking about profit, but also people and plane.

Rekosistem itself not only aims to be a sustainable company but also helps other companies to be able to implement a sustainable business model.

In carrying out an impactful business model, there are many opportunities that can be utilized besides waste, for example missions related to biodiversity, climate change, renewable energy and others. In this case, Rekosistem chose to position itself as a technology company that wants to help bridge every activity of stakeholders in the waste management ecosystem in Indonesia.

Operating for both B2B and B2C services, Rekosistem offers pick-up and deposit services for waste as needed. This service has three main products, namely Repickup Service, Home Repickup, and Redrop (Garbage Deposit). The main mission of Rekosistem is to contribute to increasing the absorption of recycled waste as well as to introduce the trend of environmentally friendly lifestyles in Indonesia.

Recosystem CEO Ernest Layman said, "Zero waste it's not about not creating trash or eliminating trash. However, that situation will be created when we can be responsible with the waste we create so that it doesn't pile up problems."

Simplify the process

Ernest also admitted that in the early days it was very difficult to convince people that proper and proper waste management was essential in life. Taking care of garbage is not just about collecting and throwing trash in its place. More than that, taking care of waste means being responsible for our waste.

Not all of our waste has to end up in landfills. There is waste that can still be managed for reuse and managed for recycling. From here, his party took the initiative to make the right product according to the current conditions.

In the management process itself, there are many things that often make people fail to sort their waste. Rekosistem wants to simplify the process, both from the side of waste generators, waste management, to the final result. On February 21, 2021, Rekosistem launched an application that is useful for exchanging waste for reward points for users.

Each of you can feel the benefits stakeholder. There is an economic value that can be felt by good service users beg or recycler. In addition, workers in the field are also facilitated with a more organized route or schedule for picking up waste. In addition, for beg/ recycling companies are also facilitated by getting a supply of segregated waste.

As a technology company, Rekosistem claims not to try to monopolize the market. The company positions itself as a bridge that can connect all stakeholders. "We hope to increase the productivity of each derivative service from this waste management," added Ernest.

Promote collaboration

In carrying out its mission, Rekosistem admits that it is not trying to replace the existing waste management ecosystem. Instead, it wants to bridge the stakeholders involved in this sector with the help of technology. The company runs a business model that emphasizes collaboration.

One of the reasons is operational efficiency. As a technology company that runs a platform in the community, collaboration can expand the company's network. In addition, education related to good and correct waste management cannot run alone, it must be accompanied by good maintenance.

"We as a startup are the executor of solutions. Its role is so important to be able to accelerate the targets that are made globally and locally. For the final product, we have partners. We are a technology platform. because we empower each stakeholderher," said Ernest

"If you have decided to build a sustainable business, it must be directly proportional to the social and environmental impacts. You just have to think about the economic value," said Ernest.

One of the keys to business continuity with impact is when business growth can be aligned with the impact created. In a joint interview Dondi Hananto, Partner of Patamar Capital, a global venture capital firm focused on funding -based startups impacts, he revealed that in carrying out an impact financial model, it is not advisable to create a large impact cost-structured, where impact creates cost new to the business.
