ShopeePay is now the preferred payment method on Google Play

Payments are also available via Doku, GoPay, Credit/Debit Cards, and mobile phone bills

The digital payment service provider under the Sea Group, ShopeePay, announced integration with the Google Play Store to support the growing trend of digital service usage in Indonesia. ShopeePay can now be used for transactions for various digital lifestyle needs, such as purchasing applications, game top ups, and subscribing to Video on Demand (VOD) services.

Head of Strategic Merchant Acquisition ShopeePay Eka Nilam Dari said, "This collaboration is the latest innovation achievement from ShopeePay in providing integrated digital payment solutions, especially on world-class platforms such as the Google Play Store. [..] With satisfying offers and unlimited access to digital payment transactions on the Google Play Store, we hope this collaboration can further encourage people's enthusiasm for digital transactions."

Users only need to add ShopeePay in the payment method menu then enter the ShopeePay pin or confirm via fingerprint/Face ID. After successfully activated, users can start making app purchases within Google Play.

Previously, GoPay was first Sign in as a payment method on Google Play since 2019. With a strategy that is not much different, these two platforms offer added value in the form of: cashback which the user can use for purchases in-app and premium apps.

In addition to using Google Play balance, transactions can also be made via Credit/Debit cards and mobile phone bills. However, reported in a press release Telkomsel, XL Axiata, and Indosat, for every purchase of the Google Play application will be subject to an additional 10% tax and a service fee of around 2%. This means that users must provide sufficient credit balance before transacting on Google Play.

The "Digital 2021" research published by We Are Social and HootSuite revealed an increasing number of people consuming digital services in Indonesia. As many as 86,2% of internet users admitted to using entertainment and video applications, an increase from 83% in the previous year. 60,4% admitted to using mobile game applications, an increase from 59% in the previous year.

This increasing trend encourages the integration of ShopeePay and Google Play Store to provide more secure and comprehensive payment access, especially for Android users who dominate more than 90% of the smartphone market in Indonesia.

The presence of technology and digitalization in Indonesia is able to change people's habits in using payment instruments. Accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of cash is now increasingly turning into digital payments.

The results of an online consumer survey conducted by Snapcart during the first quarter of 2021 showed ShopeePay as the most used digital payment platform (76%), followed by GoPay (57%), Ovo (54%), Dana (49%), and LinkAja. (21%).
