Qualcomm intends to create a new laptop chip to rival the Apple M1

Launching chip Apple M1 was a major blow to Intel and AMD. The two computer processor manufacturers are basically being challenged to create a processor as efficient as the Apple M1, which is now also being used in devices iMac or iPad Pro. But before Intel and AMD can retaliate, it looks like we'll see a response from Qualcomm first.

To Reuters, Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm's new CEO, said that one of their closest agendas was to release laptop chips which will compete directly with the Apple M1. As a system-on-a-chip (SoC), the product will pack all the essential components needed in addition to the processor, including the modem 5G.

Interestingly, Qualcomm intends to execute this plan without relying on ARM. Currently, Qualcomm already has a number of laptop chips, but they are all built on the same foundation as the line chip Snapdragon, whose processor core uses an ARM-designed architecture.

Instead, Qualcomm will maximize the new assets and resources they get from Nuvia, startup which they acquired in January for $1,4 billion. Nuvia was founded by a group of ex engineer Apple, who previously worked directly on the team that developed the chip M1. Nuvia was even sued by Apple, which claimed that the founders of Nuvia stole Apple-designed technology.

If everything goes according to plan, Qualcomm should be ready to manufacture laptop chips this new start in 2022. Apart from that, Qualcomm did not rule out licensing the technology from ARM should ARM manage to create a processor that is better than their own concoction.

Apart from developing laptop chips New, Nuvia-designed technology will also be licensed by Qualcomm to the company cloud computing interested in creating their own chip to use in data center each of them.
