Closer to Programming "Bootcamp" Organizers in Indonesia

About bootcamp programs and how they market their graduates

The digital talent gap in Indonesia has been an issue for the past few years. One of the reasons for this is the scarcity due to the lack of match between the curriculum at the university and the needs of the industry. Responding to this challenge, many non-formal educational institutions have emerged that carry training programs packaged with models bootcamp or intensive study. Not only material, this educational institution also helps its graduates connect with companies that match their industry.

We are trying to dig up information from one of the providers bootcamp programming in Indonesia, Hacktiv8. To DailySocial, Ronald Ishak, CEO of Hacktiv8, tells about Hacktiv8 and what the program looks like bootcamp which he runs. Hacktiv8 opens the FullStack JavaScript program which is divided into four stages.

Stage 0 learns the basics of programming, while in stage four, students can already implement React and React Native in building a web application. At the end of the lesson bootcamp there will be graduation ceremony where each student presents the results of their project in the form of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in front of hiring partners and Hacktiv8 guests.

Ronald continued, just like any other skill, learn programming or coding You have to have the courage to "go for it" and keep practicing until you can master it.

"We apply that mindset agile to students: dare to develop, actively look for solutions and be flexible towards change. Indirectly at Hacktiv8 Bootcamp we encourage student to think independently, then implement it with monitoring from the instructor - but the thinking must be independent. Because when he works later, there's no Hacktiv8 instructor next to him," added Ronald.

We also talked about this with Alamanda Shantika, CEO of Binar Academy. Binar Academy has the Binar Bootcamp program, an intensive training program that aims to develop digital talent with the latest technology curriculum which is expected to produce graduates who are ready to work. Not only that, the learning material is claimed to not only cover technical matters, but also non-technical matters, such as leadership, agilityand work ethic to prepare students to be ready for the digital industry.

The bootcamp is carried out for 4 to 6 months with a study schedule 3 times a week. Students will be guided by instructors with a game-like system, of sorts challenge-based learning and project-based learning. The concept was chosen to create a challenging and enjoyable experience.

"Student You must attend discussion classes for direct consultation with Binar Academy instructors who are practitioners to explore insights or points of view on a problem. In discussion classes, teaching and learning activities are focused on abstraction and reasoning skills about real programming cases. There is 3-way communication that occurs in discussion classes, namely student to the facilitator; facilitator to student; and student ke student others," explained Alamanda.

Binar Bootcamp opened in January 2020 with the Android Engineering class. Starting June 4, Binar Academy is opening two new classes, namely Full Stack Web Development and UI/UX Design. Adapting to pandemic conditions, bootcamp is now only available for online classes.

Efforts to fill the digital talent gap

The rapid development of the digital industry encourages companies to compete to find the best talent for positions that may not have been common before, such as UI/UX designer, full-stack developer, etc.

End of 2019, government Through the Ministry of Communication and Information, it is said that it has allocated hundreds of billions of Rupiah in funds to fill 20 thousand digital talents. One program that is already running is the Digitalent Scholarship with technical materials that are much needed by the digital industry today.

With the same spirit, the organizers of these bootcamp providers carry a similar dream to help provide talent who are ready to work. Not only about teaching materials, but also channels for distributing graduates.

Binar Academy, for example, apart from adopting the latest curriculum and always aligning industry needs with what they do in bootcamps, also maintains good relationships with companies and industry. The aim is to make it easier for bootcamp graduates and companies to meet each other.

"Since its founding Binary Academy in 2017, we have distributed graduates bootcamp to various types of companies including startups, corporations and state-owned companies. Binar Academy partners have two options for recruiting our graduates, namely by scheme full-time hire and schema outsourcing. Binar Academy has a special team experienced in the digital industry to find matches between preferences talent and the company in order to meet the needs of both parties," explained Alamanda.

Hacktiv8 have the same spirit. According to Ronald, they already have more than 350 hiring partners. Ronald also agreed that talent must now be balanced between coding skills and soft skill.

"It's not enough just to coding skills strong, but also how as a person technical can communicate with non-IT. Hacktiv8, as a startup, understands and applies these qualities in the process hiring. For our students, we also provide sufficient training on how to do it technical presentations to general public, reading documentation, preparing a CV, and preparing elevator pitch," explained Ronald.

Helping talent and companies discover each other

Both Hacktiv8 and Binar Academy share data about graduates bootcamp they. Hacktiv8, based on data released last March, stated that of the 57 students who took part in the bootcamp from January 1 2019 to June 30 2019, 89,5% of them decided to look for work. The remaining 10,5% continued their previous job, continued their education, or followed suit bootcamp just for self development.

Still in the same report, 180 days after graduating bootcamp, 94,7% of graduates have jobs in their field, 1,8% decided not to look for work for personal reasons, the rest (3,5%) could not be contacted.

For those who succeed working in the technical field in accordance with the bootcamp material, 78,9% became employees full time (30+ hours/week, over 6 months); 7% become contract employees, interns, and the like; 1,8% become freelancers, short duration contract employees, part time, and the like; and 7% founded a new company or business.

Ronald explained that the main challenge in distributing graduates is fluctuations in partner recruitment needs. What is increasingly visible during a pandemic like now is that several companies are reducing or even postponing recruitment activities due to the impact of the economic slowdown.

"For this reason, Hacktiv8 has a unit that functions to optimize the process of distributing graduates by providing one-stop service to hiring partners, "starting from collecting data on company needs, matching graduate profiles with recruitment criteria, to facilitating graduate interviews with Hacktiv8 partners," explained Ronald.

Meanwhile, Alamanda said that currently Binar Academy already has more than 1000 graduates. According to him, the waiting time for graduates is quite varied, however, the Binar Academy team has tried to be involved in the graduate job search process since the students were still in school. bootcamp which allows graduates to get a job 2 weeks after graduating.

"Based on the research results of the team involving engineer experienced and psychologists, which are needed by all industries today not only hard skills and soft skill but also talent which is lifelong learner, team playerand enthusiastic professional. "Binar Academy believes that the combination of a curriculum prepared according to the latest technology and an interactive learning methodology will produce talents with these abilities," concluded Alamanda.
