[NFT Series] Understanding Why NFT Was Born and Why It Was Needed

Interpreting the basic concepts of NFT from a philosophical perspective that is more friendly to the ears of ordinary people

Understanding a new technology does not always require complicated explanations, including when you want to understand what is NFT (non-fungible token). Of the many literatures that try to explain NFT, perhaps this philosophical approach is understandable: NFT has a strong correlation with human nature, namely the desire to have something.

The birth of NFT was originally due to the development of blockchain technology innovations. However, if pulled back long before that, even as early humans, the way to survive other than foraging was another priority, namely to own territory by labeling it as a sign that it was his.

In the next human evolution, in modern times, there are many innovations that can find out which is something that each human has. To the extent that a government appears in a territory that creates currency for transactions, in order to determine what goods belong to whom.

“Why NFT exist because humans basically want to have something. This is indeed the nature of human beings who want to have, it is the most fundamental. So it's not about technology, it's more about social. So it is only natural that NFT exists and in the future it will become part of every line of human life," explained the Collective CEO. Riandika concluded.

With a basic understanding like this, it means that there is no need to bother exploring blockchain technology and its derivatives. If you give another example, in the economy class and above, for example, the majority of the people have something that is non fungible, aka valuable that has emotional value that cannot be valued with money. That is NFT.

Next, marketing strategies that want to embed non-fungible elements can also be applied. Just like what IKEA does when it sells household furniture that is actually an item expendable. They utilize chairs made by designers from Sweden as a branding strategy to make them more valuable and rare than chairs made by others.

"Strategy Branding they succeeded in making buyers have to have them immediately. So the strategy [with the NFT concept] has been around for a long time. Until finally, appeared in blockchain technology, gave birth to OpenSea and so on. We believe in and focus on developing the Collectible as an NFT e-commerce for everyday life.”

Therefore, in the collective practice that wants to be friendly to NFT, the company adheres to the concept of decentralized finance (DeFi) which uses fiat currency to transact NFT. In other words, with the currency prevailing in the country, users can transact NFT. In fact, the company is integrated with popular digital payment instruments, such as Gopay, OVO, Virtual Accounts, debit/credit cards, and can pay via Alfamart and Indomaret.

NFT as self status

Slowly but surely NFT will be made more mainstream, characterized by a wide variety of companies from various verticals, including luxury goods retailing, jumping into it. The goal is not to introduce NFT, but because they have considered NFT as a status of self, a digital identity.

NFT-NFT purchased, then collected, that's what makes it a status of self who owns. People can identify a person when viewing NFT collections, this is already happening in the physical world. Judging people's personalities from their collections and preferences for something because they are unique and have memories that cannot be valued with money.

“NFT is not a currency. Just like in the real world. People who have money do they show off their money? What is definitely shown is what brand of bag, what brand of shoes, that's the function of NFT later. Can you live without a brand? It seems difficult because humans need to show off. It has become nature."

Therefore, NFT is closely related to the metaverse. In the metaverse world, it will be a separate world that has its own digital collection, from the toes to the hair attached to the avatar. In that world, avatars can have the world meet people from anywhere and do various activities.

Even in a more futuristic sense, to quote from Dr. Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist and author of books, he tries to speculate about what will happen in 2050. In one of his quotes, he says that in the future every human being will have digital immortality. This means that humans can live forever with their digital identity, even though their body and soul are gone.

He explained, even though a person has died physically, people can still feel their presence digitally, which is supported by the rapid pace of innovation in the fields of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Even in his view for a longer period of time, the next 10 thousand years the citizens of the earth will move to other planets.

"That's why Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk are racing overseas in order to prepare lifeboats at a time when climate change is unstoppable. The answer is by moving to the nearest planet, this has to do with digital immortality," concluded concluded.
