Identifying the Potential of the M2M Market in Indonesia

Currently, the use of M2M devices is still dominated by corporate and government users

Predicated as the country with the 4th largest population in the world, Indonesia has the fastest growing ecosystem of mobile device users. Based on this fact, the potential of the M2M . market (Machine-to-Machine) in Indonesia is very large. It is estimated that the growth is between 40 and 50 percent per year. This was stated by the Head of M2M Indosat Hendra Sumiarsa in an interview.

The increasing market share of M2M devices is dominated by the corporate and government sectors. This is because currently the M2M vertical market that is quite developed in Indonesia is in the financial services sector, transportation, smart energy, as well as security and supervision. Hendra said that many other sectors in Indonesia should still be optimized with the benefits of M2M.

Apart from being the initiator, the government has several other key roles

Currently also starting to grow the development of M2M-based solutions for the oil and gas industry, enterprisemobility, logistics, automation of factory equipment, to various electronic devices for consumer-based smart things. In the government sector initiative smart city also continues to grow. Although it is still in its early stages, and its utilization is still very basic, it is believed that its development in the future will be faster, considering that supporting devices have already begun to be created.

The government's important role in accelerating M2M-style renewable technology includes increasing awareness of the adoption of these technologies. As has been proclaimed by Singapore as a Smart Nation. In addition, inevitably the government must also begin to formulate more seriously various matters related to policies to assist the development of M2M. In Indonesia, there are regulations for branchless banking.

Opportunity for startups to work on products or solutions for the M2M platform

Being a service provider does not always have to produce products in the form of devices (hardware), exploiting existing potential can deplete existing challenges, many solutions can be developed on it. Call it the benefits of Wi-Fi or CCTV sensors that are starting to spread in city centers, in collaboration with the government, or local communities (such as those in Bandung), startups can work on an M2M solution.

For example, utilizing CCTV scattered in the city to easily track kidnap victims with face, body and so on recognition systems. Or the simplest and which is currently not made is to manage energy consumption (electricity) at home. M2M systems can be developed to monitor the amount of energy consumed by electrical devices at home. From this information, a conclusion can be drawn about energy saving strategies, as part of the vision of Greener Cities.

Innovation can start from something simple. It is precisely for this simple potential startup that should be dug. There are also many experimental tools on the market, and they are quite affordable. The current operating system has also been designed to support the operation of M2M devices or what is now widely referred to as the Internet of Things, which means that developers already have a foundation related to framework and security systems.
