DSResearch Report: Trends in Digital Innovation and Transformation in Corporations 2020

Reviewing trends and innovation culture of big companies in Indonesia

Corporations are always faced with dynamic business challenges caused by many factors. Starting from changing consumer habits, relevance of products/services, to technological disruption from new players. This condition makes companies have to be agile in preparing transformative steps related to strategy, business model, organizational structure, to digitalization.

This condition is certainly also experienced by corporations in Indonesia. To see how companies in Indonesia are on a transformation agenda, DSResearch compiling a report entitled "2020 Corporate Digital Transformation Report". In it, the researcher conducted interviews with more than 20 sources from large-scale companies, both in positions C-Levels nor mid-level.

The surveyed companies selected five different sectors including banking, non-banking finance, telecommunications, transportation and tourism, and FMCG. Some of these companies include BCA, Bank Mandiri, Zurich Insurance, Telkom, XL Axiata, Blue Bird, Garuda Indonesia, HM Sampoerna etc.

In addition to discussing the latest business transformation trends, this report also features case studies of the transformation processes of the companies that were the resource persons. Researchers use three identification components to find patterns of transformation carried out, including commitment of stakeholders, innovation journey, and product innovation; wrapped in the relevant framework for measurement.

Here are some interesting points summarized in the report:

  • At the corporate level, the placement of business transformation is focused on two things, namely increasing market share or customer service; and product or business asset development. Starting from increasing the resources already owned, followed by exploration and opening up new opportunities.
  • Covid-19 has dealt a blow to several types of businesses, particularly in the transportation and tourism sectors. However, some gaps can still be well optimized, for example for the logistics business. Meanwhile, for other sectors such as banking, the pandemic is a momentum to be adaptive with technology implementation.
  • In the banking sector, the last few years transformation activities have led to the realization of "open banking platform". The digital approach is also continuously optimized to improve the user experience. Collaboration with fintech also further optimized – for example by opening API services for application developers to integrate.
  • Telecommunications companies in Indonesia are no longer only focused on their main business, but have also begun to explore many other opportunities, especially related to OTT services. But not a few who failed. The collaborative approach is finally chosen by establishing a CVC, innovation lab, or acceleration program.
  • FMCG companies have experienced disruption, but most have not had a serious commitment to digital transformation. Marked by absence The roadmap digital or specialized resources set up to lead to it. They feel that it is enough to rely on distribution channels that are "open", such as by presenting lapak on the platform online marketplace.
