Halodoc Release of the "Bidanku" Application, Simplify Midwives' Administrative and Operational Processes

This application is a follow-up to funding provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in July 2019; My midwife is here purely for social activities

Halodoc inaugurated the presence of the Bidanku application after being developed since mid-2021. This application is here to digitize the administration process for midwives' services, so that they can focus on maximizing the quality of maternal and child health. In addition, this latest service is intended to strengthen technology ecosystem Halodoc existing ones, namely to simplify access to health and improve people's welfare.

This application is actually present as a form of investment realization provided by the company Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in July 2019 in a series B+ funding round. My midwife exists purely for social activities, free of charge for midwives in remote areas. The midwife becomes an extension of the hand Halodoc to enter remote areas. Currently, Bidanku has been used by midwives in various parts of Indonesia, such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, to Papua.

"In the midst of Indonesia's population of more than 270 million people, access to health services is still a challenge for people in various regions. The role of midwives in helping to maintain the health of mothers and children is also very important in the midst of an uneven distribution of doctors and health facilities in Indonesia," explained the Co-founder and CEO Halodoc Jonathan Sudharta in an official statement, Thursday (3/2).

Chairman of the Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI) Emi Nurjasmi revealed the importance of implementing health technology in supporting the quality of midwives. She said that midwives are a unique and specific profession in building a quality generation because midwives can focus on women's reproductive health, family planning, to the health of babies and toddlers.

Midwives are strategic health workers because they are in the community and they are at the forefront of health services, especially since most of the midwives in Indonesia are located in remote areas. In fact, even doctors are still very limited in being able to reach people in the regions.

“I welcome the existence of a digital platform that makes it easier for midwives to reach targets. In Indonesia alone, there are 5,5 million pregnant women and 80% of them are monitored by midwives. The digital platform will make the midwife's job easier, giving the public the right to obtain health information online real-time, "explained Amy.

Meanwhile, midwives are also considered to have an important role in helping the government focus on alleviating stunting in Indonesia. Research and Development data from the Ministry of Health states that Indonesia still has a prevalence of stunting in children of 30%.

As of December 2021, there were 266 thousand midwives in Health Service Facilities in Indonesia spread over 74.000 villages. From this figure, around 37 thousand midwives open their own practice. Midwives are also responsible for assisting 62% of births in Indonesia and 85% of antenatal care (ANC) nationally.

Therefore, Halodoc presenting the innovation of Bidanku to make it easier for midwives to face various challenges in providing health services for mothers and children, given their vital role is so important.

My Midwife Features

Midwife has three main features, namely an automatic patient reminder feature & health summary, to improve and monitor patient return visits, thereby reducing the possibility of unknown high-risk pregnancies, monitoring the continuity of contraception as part of the Family Planning (KB) program, and knowing the continuity of immunization .

Then, the patient management feature, to simplify midwife administration in one click. This feature digitizes family health care from pregnancy to immunizations; final, in-app education library, to assist midwives in educating patients in a more interactive way. This feature was developed based on the fact that midwives have an important role in educating patients. Thus, interactive educational materials will help patients understand them better.

In a separate activity, previously Jonathan explained Halodoc want to solve how midwives can treat patients better with outputs of better birth rates, lower death rates, and so on. This application focuses on solving administrative problems that previously midwives had to free up at least two hours each day to take care of them.

Not only that, this application can manage patient data and digital cards, access patient visit history automatically summarized in digital Puskesmas reports, and send visit reminders to WhatsApp, and check practice recaps to manage & develop practices. "The midwives who used the application before and after using the application, the number of visits doubled because before the application there were many whose schedules were not controlled," he said.

Furthermore, my midwife was mentioned as one of the supports Halodoc in the 2024 Health Digital Transformation Strategy Blueprint program launched by the Ministry of Health. In this regard, Farzikha Indrabhaskara Soerono, Chief of Product Officer Digital Transformation Office of the Ministry of Health, said that the biggest challenge in the digital transformation strategy in the health sector is the collection of primary community data.

In the regions, data on baby births is still very slow, even if you have to wait months for the data to be recorded at the puskesmas. In fact, from these data, the government can determine the risk of children experiencing malnutrition, for example. "Thus, through this platform, it is hoped that it will expand its reach quickly and in the midst of a pandemic, the digital platform has proven to be a catalyst for accelerating health services in Indonesia," said Farzikha.

He continued, “However, digital transformation doesn't stop here. Our big dream is that in the future, people will have access to personal health records, even before mothers become pregnant, so that they are more aware of risks, determine preventive actions, hopefully, babies can be born well and their health progress can be continuously monitored.”
