Get to know Jumpstart, a Smart Vending Machine Startup for Coffee

Present in the form of smart machines and offline outlets, soon to be available in other big cities this year

The proliferation of coffee shops in various corners of cities in Indonesia reflects how high coffee enthusiasts are. International Coffee Organization (ICO) noted that Indonesia's coffee consumption for the 2016/2017 period reached 4,6 million packs of 60 kg/lb, ranked 6th out of the top 10 countries with the largest coffee consumption in the world.

Welcoming the high demand for coffee in the country, technological innovation needed to compete to attract new consumers. Jumpstart offers a different concept of serving coffee by presenting a smart vending machine (smart vending machines) special coffee without waiter alias self-service.

To DailySocial, a Jumpstart Co-Founder, who did not wish to be named, said that the company was founded by three coffee-loving founders who care about the convenience of drinking coffee. freshly brewed in the office without having to come to the booth and queue. This solution can actually be answered through the presence of a vending machine (vending machine) which is not yet present in Indonesia.

It adopts the concept vending machine existing in developed countries and then adapted to local needs. After going through many iterations, the first Jumpstart engine was made public in 2017.

"The preparation takes a year because we don't have data on what Indonesian habits are like. So there are many tests, in terms of taste, looking for ingredients, studying machines, checking everything to see if there are any. error or not," he explained.

Further explained, the Jumpstart engine is equipped with internet of things (IoT) to manage the entire coffee making process to stock checking. Technology like this makes it easier for the team to maintain good and hygienic coffee quality. Twice a week there will be a team that cleans the machine and refills all empty materials.

Coffee is an art that requires special techniques to handle, both when measuring, grinding, pressure, hot water temperature, and others. All of these things must be in the right dose in order to provide the best quality. Hence, he claimed Jumpstart using the method freshly brewed.

"We have a team expert who made the coffee menu. What kind of coffee do Indonesians like, most of them don't like sour coffee, it tends to be sweet but strong [caffeine]. The price is much more affordable than the price of a cup in coffee shop, we start from Rp. 10 thousand to Rp. 15 thousand."

In its development until now, Jumpstart has developed 20 menus not only coffee, but also non-coffee such as chocolate, matcha, and can be brewed hot or cold.

The Co-Founder of Jumpstart is reluctant to elaborate further on the distribution of the engine so far and the business model. Currently they are still playing in Jakarta with a point of presence in offices, or public places such as malls, campuses, hospitals or so on.

Jumpstart competes with other coffee shop startup players who are adopting digital technology such as Fore and Memories Coffee.

Grateful for the presence of e-money players

Jumpstart journey actually does not directly provide payment options with e-money. Initially they adopted payment by cash. He explained that the educational process with the application is much easier than cash because it is supported by various factors.

Moreover, there are still many consumers who do not understand the concept vending machine that everything self-service. This unformed habit creates a feeling of fear of being cheated.

For example, when it comes to paying in cash, there are many complications that ultimately hinder the intention of the buyer. For example, money should not be run down, must provide the right money, when entering the money must be one by one, not all at once. When the error occurred, the buyer finally complained because there was no guard.

"Now with the presence of e-money players it is much more convenient the process. We are quite helped because timing we are present [along] with the presence of e-money players."

Next plan

He said Jumpstart plans to expand its presence to other big cities, including Bandung. Next the company will release an application to make it easier to order drinks.

"Perhaps when we expand, it will adjust the taste of coffee adapts to the tastes of each resident there because each region has different tastes."

Not only selling through smart coffee machine at various points, the company also opened offline outlets like most other coffee shops. The outlet serves to serve buyers who order via online platforms such as GoFood. The locations are scattered in office buildings, malls, or public places.

Official site Jumpstart now accommodates online ordering.

Jumpstart has received funding from investors with undisclosed details. The total Jumpstart team now numbers around 40 people.
