Five Unique Ways for Technology Industry Activists That Can Be Implemented in Government

Learn from the experiences of entrepreneurs Nadiem Makarim and Andrew Yang to former "hacker" Beto O'Rourke

Enter Nadiem Makarim to the ranks of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet gave a signal that people in the technology industry (techpeople) can make a wider contribution to society. Of course Nadiem is not the only tech guy trying this path.

The election of the presidential candidate for the United States Democratic Party for 2020 was also enlivened by two young candidates who had previously been in contact with the world of technology. Andrew Yang and Beto O'Rourke, although not millennials, have similar exposures.

Andrew Yang at the beginning of time dot com bubble once built a startup and later became CEO of Venture for America, a program to help college graduates who want to become entrepreneurs or build startups.

If later elected as President, Andrew wants to create a new cabinet-level position in the form of the Technology Department which will manage artificial intelligence and other new technologies.

Another candidate is Beto O'Rourke. Even though he doesn't have a background as a startup founder, he is reported to have become a hacker and joined the notorious group "hactivism" which is the oldest computer hacker group in US history.

While there is no indication that O'Rourke was involved in the most sophisticated types of hacking, such as breaking into computers, his membership in the group may explain his approach to politics in a different way. Background as hacker contained in the vision and mission if elected as President, namely overhauling the existing system and improving it with new ideas and innovations.

No wonder when innovation, technology, and disruption are the main focus techpeople when entering the government.

The following article will explore the five points that most people have techpeople and how they can make changes to existing systems.

Dare to take risks

As startup founders, Nadiem Makarim and Andrew Yang understand the difficulty of building a start-up company. Not only requires capital and resources, but also the ability to dare to take risks. Not many startups are successful when running a business in the beginning. It takes time and Yago's defensive effort which is long enough for a startup to be successful. They are required to find the best solution so that the company can continue to run the business and earn income.

When they enter the government, it is certain that they try to understand the existing process and, if possible, carry out the transformation accordingly value they have during startup.

Cut bureaucracy

One of the advantages of working at a startup is the freedom and a more open work atmosphere compared to the conventional style that is full of bureaucracy. Speed of making decisions, determining the right people to work on projects, and accelerating all work processes are the soul of a startup.

This anti-bureaucracy will be a challenge for those who enter the ranks of government. These values will try to be implemented slowly and they will try to cut complicated bureaucratic processes into simpler and more effective ones.

Collaboration

Another uniqueness that is only found in the startup world is the concept of open collaboration. No longer carrying a workspace with a divider and separate office space, startups are starting to implement a lot of open workspaces that facilitate collaboration between employees.

Collaboration and corporate culture are not only the responsibility of early-level employees. Each level must be able to contribute and be responsible for all assigned work.

Fast adoption and agile

Agile is a term that is mostly used by startup activists. Agile here means the ease of all parties to make changes, transformations, and not focus on one mindset just. Flexibility and more open insight are also concepts agile what startups want to achieve.

As a technology leader, techpeople also tend to be quicker to adopt changes in order to create innovations and better solutions. In the end, this concept will make a lot of sense to be applied in government, so that it doesn't get stuck in routines and focuses on the future.

Innovation is king

The startup world is full of innovation and how the innovations created can make the right solution. Innovation will ultimately be the key to techpeople when entering the government.

Innovation involves the application of information, imagination, and initiative in order to realize greater or different value from resources.

Encouraging employees to be more creative and aggressive will create new ideas that are better and more useful, supported by technology and various things tools which exists.
