DailySocial Report: Cryptocurrency in Indonesia 2017

Respondents tend to be interested in exploring further

When Bitcoin was first introduced in 2009 as a form of "virtual money" or "cryptocurrency", various controversies arose from various parties; government, academics, business people, even (must be admitted) criminals.

And now, eight years after that, Bitcoin is de facto in circulation and widely used around the world. In fact, various other cryptocurrencies have emerged such as Ethereum and Dogecoin (yes, Dogecoin; a name that refers to a funny Doge meme). Several governments have decided not to recognize cryptocurrencies as a means of payment, including the United States SEC, the PRC central bank, and including Bank Indonesia. But what about Indonesian consumers? How do consumers view cryptocurrencies today?

The survey was carried out by DailySocial.id, in collaboration with the JakPat Mobile Survey Platform, to measure the views of the Indonesian consumer community towards Bitcoin and to cryptocurrencies in general. The survey responses were taken from 1024 respondents who were sampled proportionally from the population of smartphone users throughout Indonesia. The survey was conducted on September 28-29, 2017. Some of the survey findings include:

  • 78,71% of respondents have heard of Bitcoin and/or other cryptocurrencies
  • 35,99% of respondents have used Bitcoin and/or other cryptocurrencies for goods and/or services transactions
  • 84,30% of respondents rate Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as potential investment tools/instruments
  • 12,79% of respondents have ever done bitcoin mining and/or mining other cryptocurrencies.
  • 55,76% of respondents do not know that Bank Indonesia does not recognize Bitcoin as a form of payment instrument.
