BlackBerry Messenger is Still the Most Popular in Indonesia According to Google Trends Throughout 2014

Welcoming the new year 2015, Google Indonesia summarizes the most trending searches in their search engine throughout 2014. According to Google Trends, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) became the most searched instant messaging application this year, beating WhatsApp Messenger who won last year. This is an interesting discussion, considering that XL Axiata (XL) and Global Web Index (GWI) data state that WhatsApp is the most widely used application in Indonesia.

In contrast to last year's Google Trends summary, which focused on instant messaging, this year Google reveals search in a broader and general scope. As usual, the search results for the segment instant messaging still interesting to discuss.

BBM became an instant messaging application that turned out to be the most sought after by the Indonesian people throughout 2014. Overtaking WhatsApp, last year's champion, who is now in second place, followed by LINE.

If we look back at the instant messaging segment in Indonesia throughout 2014, WhatsApp has proven to dominate the market. XL disclose that of the 31,2 million users who access the internet, BBM users have shrunk to less than 10% of the total XL mobile Internet users.

Same with XL, GWI data explained that in the third quarter of 2014, as many as 78 percent of Internet users in Indonesia surf through their mobile devices. No one on the list uses BBM, while 34 percent of respondents use WhatsApp.

Google Trends itself reflects what Indonesian people do through the use of the Google search engine. Trends and categories may change with the behavior of their audience from time to time. What is described by Google Trends seems to be evidence that the interest in fuel in the country has not lost its momentum. There are not many users now, but the market seems to be waiting for the latest breakthrough from the application that was once the ruler of instant messaging in the country.

“Google is the search tool of choice for the Indonesian people. We will work harder to accommodate more relevant searches," said Google Indonesia Consumer Marketing Manager Sandy Tantra.

The following are the 10 most sought after instant messaging applications in Indonesia in 2014:
