Amazon Transforms Lumberyard Into an Open-Source Game Engine Called Open 3D Engine

The Open 3D Engine project is supported by a number of well-known companies such as Adobe, Intel, Huawei, and Niantic

game engine which can be used free of charge by developer It's very common for us to see this in 2021. Even engine classmate U can now be used for free, and developer just required pay royalty fees if the income earned has reached 1 million dollars.

What is still relatively rare is game engine which is open-source, which is free to be modified according to the wishes and needs of each developer. That is the main selling point to be offered by Open 3D Engine (O3DE), game engine new born Lumberyard, engine Amazon concoction that was released about five years ago.

Lumberyard, for the uninitiated, was originally formulated using CryEngine as its base. In order to avoid developer From licensing issues or intellectual property infringement, Amazon decided to build O3DE from scratch. In other words, O3DE is not just a Lumberyard that has undergone re-branding and made open-source just like that.

Also new are components renderersher, which is claimed to be superior and more photorealistic than Lumberyard's. Amazon is quite confident that O3DE has the potential to be used outside of industry video game.

However, O3DE's biggest appeal is, of course, its openness, and this can lead to at least two advantages. The first, like a project open-source On the other hand, O3DE will continue to be refined over time, because anyone can contribute to its development. No kidding, the party that oversees the development of O3DE is the Linux Foundation, which we know has a long experience of open source development.

A number of well-known companies such as Adobe, Huawei, Intel, and Niantic have also announced their commitment to contribute to the development of O3DE, and they will all collaborate under a platform called Open 3D Foundation. In October, the Open 3D Foundation already has plans to hold an O3DECon event and invite the community developer to participate.

The second advantage is the ease with which O3DE can be 'split' in case developer only need to use some of its features, then integrate it into engine others they use. As a project born from Amazon's lab, O3DE certainly offers easy integration into infrastructure cloud belongs to Amazon Web Services (AWS), and this should be a draw for some developer.

O3DE is now available in the form of developer preview. The final version is targeted to be available near the end of 2021. In addition to developing game PC, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android; O3DE in the future can also be used to work on game Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Oculus, and even AR headset MagicLeap.
