Gojek Claim "Milestone" Achievement, Transactions Translucent 127 Trillion Rupiah in 2018

To counter claims Grab as the closest competitor

Gojek revealed some of the latest data related to its achievements since eight years of operation. The data was deliberately disclosed to counter the claims of its strongest competitors, Grab, regarding the achievement of transactions in Indonesia throughout 2018.

Founder and CEO Gojek Global Nadiem Makariem said, growth gross transaction value (GTV) increased 13,5 times from 2016 to 2018. In nominal terms it reached more than $9 billion (equivalent to Rp127 trillion) in 2018 and the total annual transaction volume reached 2 billion.

Next, the number of monthly active users is claimed to be up to 1,5 times higher than competitors who refer to the report "The State of Mobile 2019" from App Annie that mentions Gojek as app on demand with the highest number of monthly active users in Indonesia throughout 2018.

Gojek now has 1,7 million driver partners, nearly 400 thousand partners merchants, and more than 60 thousand service providers in Southeast Asia. Application Gojek alone has been downloaded more than 142 million times.

According to three studies cited by Nadiem, namely Financial Times Confidential (2018), DailySocial and JakPat (2018), and YouGov (2019), all of which cite Go-Pay as the number one payment instrument in Indonesia.

"9 billion dollars for gross transactions that's above competitors, even though we're new to foreign countries. [..] According to our three research institutions, Go-Pay is the leading, number one. Sorry to have to clarify, the most important thing is the impact. Just work for real, instead of continuing gambir achievements," said Nadiem, yesterday (11/4).

Two major booster businesses Gojek, Go-Food and Go-Pay also revealed their achievements. The Go-Food service is claimed to be the largest in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world.

Go-Food Chief Commercial Expansion Catherine Hindra Sutjahyo said Go-Food had even beaten the Go-Ride transportation service. Go-Food is said to have grown at least four times bigger than GrabFood.

The number of Go-Food orders is 30 million per month in Southeast Asia with a seven-fold growth from December 2016 to December 2018. As many as 80% of Go-Food orders do not come from large merchants, but from MSME merchants. The average delivery time is 27 minutes.

"Now there are more than 300 thousand Go-Food merchants, last year there were 125 in April. It can be calculated what the monthly addition looks like," said Catherine.

Go-Pay CEO Aldi Haryopratomo added, since leaving the ecosystem Gojek, the use of Go-Pay is said to have increased 25 times since it was first introduced. This has boosted Go-Pay's prestige as the most widely used e-money service in Indonesia according to research from three different institutions.

Go-Pay is now partnered with 28 financial institutions, has been accepted by more than hundreds of thousands of business partners in 370 cities in Indonesia. Go-Pay's infrastructure is supported by various services, including Spots -- a multifunctional online cashier application.

Spots can accept Go-Food orders, Go-Pay payments, print receipts, and write daily reports for various types of payments. Payment gateways Midtrans also supports online merchants to accept payments from various financial institutions.

Declare "open war"

Nadiem is implicitly sarcastic, as well as questioning the claims Grab about many things. For example market penetration Grab in Indonesia, and great app.

Nadiem claimed Gojek menjadi great app first in the world. Not just one app, there are three great app that the company has developed. They are apps end users Gojek for transactions, Go-Biz (rebranding of Go-Resto) for merchant MSMEs, and Gojek Driver for driver partners.

"We have great app first in the world consisting of large pillars, each of which we will continue to explore. The pillars are human transportation, logistics, food, payment, and fintech."

These pillars, he continued, are proof that concepts made by local people can bring benefits, not only to Indonesia but also to all corners of Southeast Asia. Whereas, Gojek can be said just went out cage.

Nadiem called the battle with Grab first started when Gojek still received funding of US$2 million, while the position Grab has reached US$250 million in funding. Gojek considered to be a major strength because of the ability to understand the wishes and hear input from consumers.

"So the biggest is important, but not the most important. The most important thing is real impact Gojek for the general public. Win in Indonesia, win in Southeast Asia. [..] We are happy to have such a big challenge [from Grab] because of that we always make new things every day," he said.

Another advantage mentioned by Nadiem is Gojek starting from two-wheeled transportation, so there is efficiency. Partners can work all day, deliver people, courier goods, deliver food, and even sell top up Go-Pay. He called the partner's income higher than Grab.

Support from investors was also no less great. Nadiem claims every time Gojek want to make funding always smooth, run effectively, and be successful. The line of investors behind Gojek also diversified from various directions.

When asked about the response to the decacorn status, Nadiem argued that valuation was not something that was announced to the public because it was not corporate culture.

"Our culture is not celebrating ourselves. Let others celebrate. Valuation is important, but not the most important thing. The most important thing is the numbers, the impact on Indonesia that we are proud of, not valuation," he concluded.
