XL Collaborates with Local Developers to Develop IoT Applications

Through a competition held together with Dicoding using the Agnosthing platform

The penetration of Internet of Thing (IoT) innovation in Indonesia is starting to grow. After many IoT initiatives have sprung up in the country, one of the telecommunications operators, PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL) is also trying to develop IoT products to meet the needs of the community and industry. To present innovative products that are in line with market demands, XL also embraces local developers through competitions held thanks to XL's collaboration with Dicoding.

XL's Chied Digital Service Officer Joseph Lumban Gaol in his release said that he saw collaborating with local developers as the best option to continue developing IoT services. According to him, Indonesia has many talents who can create digital solutions. That's why XL is here to collaborate to increase their productivity.

Currently, according to Joseph, XL already has an IoT platform named Agnostic. A telecommunication service development platform that includes device management services, application management, be it applications mobile devices as well as web applications, managing Data Package or SMS connectivity. In addition, this platform can also be developed as a Solution as a Service (SaaS) solution.

To develop the IoT initiative, XL in collaboration with Dicoding held the "Agnosthings IoT Developer Challenge" competition with a target to produce more than 100 applications for Agnisthings in a variety of solutions, especially those that can be applied to Smart City, Smart Home and Creative City services.

Co-Founder of Dicoding Narenda Wicaksono said, "We appreciate the cooperation that exists with XL Axiata to encourage developers and makers in the country to develop IoT solutions that can be utilized by the wider community.”

This year the competition will be held twice. The first event took place in Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya some time ago. In the first event, no less than 250 developers participated in the competition. In addition to the competition on this occasion also takes place coaching clinic about the Agnosthings platform.

Various solutions created in the competition, for the Smart Home theme, include: remote control for lamps, electronic devices, gas stoves, water tendons, and home appliances that require careful use. Then there are also innovative solutions in the form of automatic devices for lights and air conditioners, which when the homeowner is near the lights and air conditioners can turn on by themselves. Another interesting solution is an application for babysitting. This application has features that can monitor the baby's condition, including setting a comfortable room temperature for the baby, and can also detect the sound of a baby crying.

Furthermore, together with BEKRAF and Dicoding, XL will hold the second event at the end of 2016. In the competition, XL challenged the participants to create a digital application solution based on mobile devices or websites with two themes, namely Smart Home and Smart Power. They also have to construct the solution that was created, starting from problem statements underlying solution creation, innovation design, solution model to be built on Agnosthings, to development phase plans.
