Minister of Communication and Information Signs Draft of Frequency Regulation for IoT

To stipulate telecommunication tools or equipment operating on the radio frequency spectrum based on class permits

The Indonesian government shows support for the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technology through the Draft Ministerial Regulation (RPM) which was recently signed by the Minister of Communication and Information, Rudiantara.

Acting Head of Public Relations of the Ministry of Communications and Informatics Ferdinandus Setu said, this RPM has an urgency to meet the availability of a radio frequency spectrum of 350 MHz, for mobile broadband in accordance with the targets of the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics for 2015-2019, through the determination of radio frequency bands and technical provisions for the use of Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) telecommunications equipment.

"The support is in the form of determining radio frequency bands and technical provisions for the use of non-cellular Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) telecommunications tools and equipment," explained Ferdinandus.

According to Ferinandus, the background for making this RPM is to implement the provisions of Article 68 paragraph (3) of the Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Information Technology No. 9 of 2018 concerning Operational Provisions for the Use of Radio Frequency Spectrum.

The RPM signed by the Minister of Communication and Information stipulates that telecommunication tools or equipment operate on the radio frequency spectrum based on class permits, namely Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Short Range Device, Low Power Wide Area Noncellular (LPWA Non-cellular), Licensed Assisted Access (LAA), Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), and tools that operate in radio frequency bands that are used based on licenses of the same class according to the level of technology and characteristics.

"The provisions on the use of radio frequencies are based on class permits, which are shared (sharing) at the time, region, and/or technology in harmony between users, are prohibited from causing harmful interference, not getting interference protection from other users and must comply with the technical provisions stipulated , said Ferdinandus like quoted Business.

Chairman of the IoT Association Indonesia Teguh Prasetya when contacted DailySocial revealed, his party positively welcomed the regulation that was passed. The regulation that authorizes the use of frequencies for IoT is in line with the Indonesian IoT Association's program to continue to encourage the growth of the IoT ecosystem in Indonesia.

Teguh said, "Of course we, from the Indonesian IoT Association, welcome the ratification of the regulation on the use of frequencies allocated to IoT users and providers in the country."

"This is in line with our program this year to continue to encourage penetration of the growth of the IoT ecosystem in Indonesia, starting from makers, network providers, platform providers, to providers of IoT applications and solutions for all sectors, including industry, consumer, health, agriculture, fisheries, urban, transportation to banking," he explained.
