Listening to 2019 Tech Trends in Indonesia

There are several new technologies that are popular and are starting to be applied in Indonesia. This includes Artificial intelligence (AI), big data, digital payments, blockchain, up to omnichannel. In 2019, it is predicted that more technology trends will mushroom globally.

In the #TuesdayStartup session, Managing Director of Samsung Research Indonesia Alfred Boediman revealed technology trends that will have an impact in Indonesia, one of the largest countries for potential digital economy in South East Asia.

Lack of digitallife in Indonesia

One of the reasons why Indonesia has become a favorite market for Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Alibaba to invest in Indonesia is the lack of digitallife among the Indonesian people. Seeing these opportunities, services and technologies that are relevant to market conditions are presented. Not surprisingly, Indonesia has turned out to be one of the largest social media users in Southeast Asia, such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

"Indonesian people really like social media. For this reason, in the end all social media applications and social media video platform very popular in Indonesia," said Alfred.

In 2018, Indonesia produced many startups that used technology and served to make people's lives easier every day. This directly affects the lifestyle of many people, ranging from dependence on smartphones to the easier communication using the internet.

However, according to Alfred, the shortage in Indonesia is the low quality of talent. Although Indonesia has many workers of active age, this is not accompanied by the quality of education and training skill appropriate.

Tech trends of 2019

Although there are no significant changes compared to this year, in 2019 it is predicted that more technology trends will follow.disrupt work and lifestyle. Included are:

Learning in real time, namely the habit to study online anywhere and anytime. This activity has been presented by many startups targeting educational technology (edtech). It is predicted that in 2019 learning informally using certain platforms online will be even more massive.

Power to the people, namely the opportunity and all the possibilities that can be done by the people to buy the product. No longer doing the conventional way, now the fulfillment of the need for goods or services can be done online by making purchases at e-commerce services. The search process can also be done using a search engine, so that offline searches do not need to be done anymore.

The end of fixed jobs, the meaning here is that if you don't have the special abilities or skills required it will be difficult to get a job. In the end, all of these things can still be achieved, depending on how each individual can accelerate the opportunity.

"Before technology started to emerge, jobs could be categorized by job description. Later all jobs will be more easily replaced by technology. For that it is mandatory to learn all skill that exist by opening up their horizons," said Alfred.
