IoT and AI are considered to be strong foundations for technological innovation in Indonesia

IDX Incubator again held a technology and startup discussion session for the second time. In this session, incubation program which was carried by the Indonesia Stock Exchange with the theme "Technology vs Humanity". In this discussion, two speakers were presented, namely Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kevin Wu and Managing Director of Samsung R&D Indonesia Alfred Boediman.

It started with a presentation by Alfred who underlined that the emergence of digital startups is enough to give a new color to the technology industry in Indonesia, especially in relation to product innovation. One that is currently starting to emerge and develop is the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Alfred believes that these two things will be significant in the future, because they become the main foundation smart things, like smart city, smart home, smart transportation and other fields.

Indeed, if you look at current technological developments, the direction is already there. Call it a startup like nodeflux, its product that combines IoT capabilities with AI is now able to complement CCTV devices installed in urban areas to be more “alive” – in the sense of not only recording images, but providing analytical analysis. real-time. Then there is also an example Atnic, this startup focuses on IoT services that help shrimp farmers to increase their production through a technological approach.

However, innovation itself is always considered gradual, from the research process, development to massive implementation. What is clear is that everything must begin with good acceptance by the user. In Indonesia, it can be indicated that there is a good acceptance of technological innovation, Alfred gave an example with the presence of various online services that exist today.

“Many people's activities now depend on online services, such as on-demand or E-commerce, which is proven to be able to provide convenience in carrying out various community activities. This is also proof that technology is supportive, not totally changing existing activities,” explained Alfred.

Kevin also added that one of the bases for technological innovation is in the hands of digital startups. For this reason, it is one of the urgencies of various parties to support the growth of digital startups in Indonesia. Kevin also explained, seeing the current penetration, he believes that startups will continue to grow. One way that can be done to ensure that startups do not stagnate in the initial phase –can scale up at a higher level—can do 3Cs, namely Connecting, Collaborating and Contributing.

AI products are also one of the current trends in Indonesia. This technology is predicted to be able to replace some human roles with a more automated system. Computers are able to respond to user needs as if they were served by human officers. So will this technology really make robots that are very intelligent like humans? According to Kevin, no, no matter how sophisticated the role of humans cannot be completely replaced.

"The more sophisticated technology in the future cannot completely replace the position of humans who create data and technology systems directly," said Kevin.

In terms of its use, both speakers believe that AI will have a lot of good impacts. Intelligence for technology is very important, to maximize its use.

"The trend of AI technology will experience major changes to support human activities in certain sectors. In the future there will also be many considerations that need to be analyzed by businesses, when they want to replace the role of humans into fully technology," said Alfred.
