Targeting Beginner Internet Users, Twitter and Indosat Ooredoo Launch Twitter Lite

Indonesia is the second country to try out Twitter's newest feature after India last month

Today, (3/4) Twitter officially brought Twitter Lite to Indonesia by cooperating with Indosat Ooredoo as a strategic partner. Twitter Lite is expected to be Twitter's move to attract new user segments who are still not familiar with the internet world, located in remote cities.

Twitter does specialize in launching Twitter Lite for developing countries with large populations. The first time, Twitter Lite was presented in India about a month ago. Now it's Indonesia's turn to try it.

The presence of this latest feature does not merely divert Twitter users from the application to use Twitter Lite. The use of Twitter Lite is more intended for internet users who are still new.

Twitter Lite is specially designed using Progressive Web App. No need for users to download new apps, they can access them via a mobile browser via the site mobile.twitter.com. The appearance is not much different from the application.

However, the experience offered is limited. Twitter Lite cannot be used for live streaming and autoplay timeline. Twitter Lite is designed to reduce data usage by up to 70%, making it more affordable for areas with expensive package prices.

Not only that, Twitter Lite is also claimed to be memory friendly because it only requires a memory capacity of less than 1 megabyte. This makes content loading up to 30% faster. Twitter Lite can also be accessed offline, provides automatic notifications, and can be added to your phone's home screen.

"Twitter Lite is an important form of Twitter's commitment to Indonesia as one of the most populous countries in the world. Now users can easily take part in popular conversations on timelines such as Kpop, soccer leagues, and the latest information in the entertainment world," explained Managing Director of APAC Twitter. Maya Hari.

Head of Business Development South East Asia & Australia Twitter Dwi Adriansyah added that the presence of Twitter Lite is expected to lead new internet users to slowly get acquainted with the internet world.

Based on the findings of Twitter research before launching Twitter Lite, Indonesians in small towns want to get the latest information and participate in global conversations. However, they have to deal with substandard local connections, unfriendly data package prices, and limited phone memory.

"From these findings, it became our consideration to launch Twitter Lite which is specifically dedicated to developing countries. We want to introduce the internet to the wider community through Twitter Lite as a first step, we also conduct roadshows to 14 cities to introduce this feature," he said.

For the strategic partnership between Twitter and Indosat Ooredoo, Indosat provides a package offer to increase data users and make it easier to access internet subscriptions through the Rp1 (IM3 Duo) package with a SIM card for duo, which allows users to have a local phone number on their Indosat cellular card, as well as quota free internet for one month.

"Indosat Ooredoo's customers currently have more than 80 million people, but not all of them use the internet. This collaboration is an opportunity for us to increase the number of users who subscribe to data packages," said Chief New Business Innovation Officer Indosat Ooredoo Prashant Gokarn.

Indosat also makes it easy for users to find various entertainment and sports content on Twitter via the page t.co/entertainment and t.co/sports.
