APJII Survey: Internet Users in Indonesia Reached 171,17 Million Throughout 2018

As many as 64,8% of Indonesia's population have access to the internet

The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) released a survey on penetration and behavior of internet users in 2018. It was stated that the number of internet users reached 171,17 million people last year.

This figure is up 10,12% compared to previous year of 143,26 million people. Compared to the BPS version of the population of 264,16 million people, it can be said that there are already 64,8% of Indonesia's population has access to the internet.

"Compared to BPS data, Indonesia's population is 264,14 million, meaning [from there] our internet users are around 171 million," explained APJII Secretary General Henri Kasyfi Soemartono, yesterday (15/5).

According to him, this growth is inseparable from the massive development of telecommunications infrastructure carried out by 540 APJII members. These members come from various ISP players in all regions, both nationally and locally.

Further explained, the contribution of users per region is still dominated by Java, 55%. Then followed by Sumatra 21%, Sulawesi-Maluku-Papua 10%, Kalimantan 9%, and Bali-Nusa Tenggara 5%.

Interestingly, this time APJII divides user contributions per province from the previous per island. This is intended to see how deep the internet penetration is in each province. In fact, Henri said that next year, APJII plans to see penetration per district.

This contribution is seen from the number of users. But if you look at the penetration, talk about the number of users compared to the population in the area.

"The next survey, next year we want it per district. So that we can hear each governor so that they have a portrait of what their area looks like and the next steps to take."

The survey stated that for Java, West Java was the province with the highest internet user contribution with 16,6%. Yogyakarta was the lowest at 1,5%. If you look at the penetration, the contribution from Jakarta is the highest with a percentage of 80,4%. West Java was the lowest at 58,3%.

For Sumatra, the highest contribution was held by North Sumatra 6,3%, Jambi being the smallest 0,6%. From the penetration, Bengkulu is the largest at 85% and Lampung is the lowest at 39,5%. Meanwhile for Kalimantan, the contribution from West Kalimantan dominates with a percentage of 2,1%. West Kalimantan dominates 80% for its penetration.

The contribution from South Sulawesi was the highest with a percentage of 3,7% for Sulawesi-Maluku-Papua. The highest penetration came from Southeast Sulawesi with 80%. Meanwhile, the highest penetration in Bali-Nusa Tenggara came from NTB with 68,2%.

Talking about the age of internet users, APJII noted that the highest penetration came from those aged 15-19 years at 91%. Followed by the age group of 20-24 years (88,5%) and 25-29 years (82,7%). The lowest penetration came from the group of 65 years and over at 8,5%.

Then, looking at penetration by occupation, the group that comes from large entrepreneurs occupies the highest position (100%), teachers (100%), and online traders (100%). The lowest penetration is occupied by farmers own land (33,5%), farm laborers (25,7%), and smallholders (20,3%).

Internet user behavior profile 2018

APJII reveals that the most users are connected daily to the internet via smartphone (93,9%). Brand smartphone The most widely used are Samsung (37,7%), Oppo (18%), and Xiaomi (17,7%).

Users mentioned that the average time needed in a day to use the internet was dominated by those who answered around 3-4 hours a day (14,1%). They use the internet for communication through messages, social media, and to find work-related information. All three occupy the position of 24,7%.

In terms of entertainment content, the most accessed by users are watching videos 45,3%, playing games 17,1%, and listening to music 13,3%. While for commercial purposes to buy goods online, the highest number of users answered that they had never visited (53,4%).

While those who have, the majority answered Shopee (11,2%), Bukapalak (8,4%), Lazada (6,7%), Tokopedia (4,3%), and Traveloka (2,3%). Users buy clothing (14,6%), books (4%), accessories (3%), bags (2,9%), and electronics 3%).

"This means there is great potential for players E-commerce that there are still many internet users who have never used it for online shopping."

Users who answered that they had never shopped online mentioned the reasons because they preferred to buy directly because they could immediately (18,8%), could not use the application (12,2%), were worried that the goods would not arrive (9,5%), and it was complicated because they had to transfers (9%).

The survey conducted by APJII, used 5.900 samples with margin of error 1,28%. Data was collected by means of interviews assisted by questionnaires. Technique sampling used is probability sampling multistage random sampling.

The survey was conducted from March 9, 2018 to April 14, 2019. APJII explained that the sample data interviewed were users who had used the internet for more than 4 months prior to data collection in the field. APJII collaborated with the Indonesian Polling research institute for this survey.
