Carousell Indonesia's Achievements and Plans After Three Years of Operation

So far, haven't done monetization yet

Celebrating its third anniversary, service mobile classified app from Singapore, Carousell, describes the achievements and plans in 2018. From the data submitted, it is revealed that 2,1 million items have been sold on Carousell until the third quarter of 2017. The most popular categories are gadgets and electronics, men's and women's clothing, health and beauty goods, and baby products.

In Indonesia alone, Carousell, which is known as a platform for buying and selling used goods, has around 8,8 million listing, with an average of about 100 items pre-loved registered to the platform within one minute. Of the total number of users on Carousell, most are individuals and only a few shop owners who sell used goods use Carousell.

"In the third year of Carousell's presence in Indonesia, we want to inspire more Indonesians to buy and sell used goods using the Carousell platform," said Carousell Co-Founder Marcus Tan.

Launching new features utilizing Artificial Intelligence technology

To provide maximum service and a faster sales process, in 2018 Carousell plans to launch the latest features utilizing AI technology. Starting from Smart Listing which can provide more relevant recommendations for each user, a new Home Screen display that is designed to be more personal following the interests and preferences of users, to updating In-App Chat which is currently embedded in the Carousell application.

"We hope that all of these new features can speed up the process of registering goods, selling from about 30 seconds to 3 seconds while facilitating communication between sellers and buyers," said Marcus.

Haven't monetized yet

Still focusing on user acquisition (seller and buyer), Carousell Indonesia has yet to do monetization. This is done according to Carousell Indonesia's plan, namely accelerating growth and increasing active users. Currently Carousell is available in Greater Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, and Bandung.

"Unlike Singapore, which has a wider market, for the last 5 years we have started monetizing with advertising features and other additions, while in Indonesia we have not launched such monetization activities," said Marcus.

After getting 2016 Series B funding then led by Rakuten Ventures together with Sequia India, Golden Gate Ventures, and 500 Stratups, for $35 million (approximately IDR 458 billion), currently Carousell claims to have no plans to raise funds. Furthermore, Carousell is still developing technology and improving the mobile application so that it can function more advance.
