Bank Indonesia Encourages AliPay and WeChat Pay to Partner with Local Banks

The high number of tourists from China who use e-money is considered a potential for partner operators and banks

Bank Indonesia (BI) encourages digital payment services Alipay and WeChat Pay to collaborate with local banks to run their operations in Indonesia.

The Senior Governor of BI, Mirza Adityaswara, stated that WeChat Pay and Alipay are two digital payment services that are widely used in China. Their presence in Indonesia can present great potential, given the large number of tourists from China who are accustomed to making payments using the platform.

"Tourists from China are already accustomed to paying using a QR Code, Chinese tourists are number one (the number of visits) so how should we facilitate that," Mirza explained.

WeChat Pay and Alipay's partnership with local banks is also expected to bring benefits to the banking sector with the large number of Chinese tourists entering Indonesia.

"How do we facilitate that, so WeChat and Alipay must cooperate with national banks, so that national banks get the cake from the Chinese tourist transactions," Mirza explained.

Pembayaran WeChat Pay and Alipay currently utilize QR Code technology, so users only need to scan the code on the phone merchant to make payment.

Meanwhile, so far, the central bank is still standardizing QR Code payments. BI plans to also launch the rules of payment transactions with this QR Code to support the national economy.

In Indonesia Ant Financial, service owner payment Alipay, has teamed up with Emtek to form j gave birth to the DANA digital payment service. Currently, DANA has been integrated with BBM and Bukalapak.
