5 local startups that closed their services in 2015

Starting from operational issues, market competition, to strategic mistakes, these startups are finally closed

Many things have happened in the national startup ecosystem as of 2015. From the story of funding, the birth of a new startup, to a startup business that is growing rapidly and many are predicted to soon have the title unicorn. But behind it all, 2015 was also the last year to operate for several local startups who had matured their business in Indonesia.

From the data we recorded, there were at least five local startups that decided to close their services this year. They are:

Handymantis

This all-in-one courier service startup was founded by Ahmad Fathi Hadi. Nearly three years of operation, HandyMantis often pitted against service ride-sharing Go-Jek. Earlier this year HandyMantis planned to launch the app mobile devices to expand its range of services. Had slumped, the management was quick to make improvements to the internal management.

However, the efforts taken to maintain operations have not resulted in the improvement of HandyMantis' business. As of September 18, 2015, this startup discontinued and closing business service which has been executed.

Inapay

Inapay is a service provider escrow (shared account) that allows users to make payment transactions when buying and selling online. The concept used is similar to the Joint Account (RekBer) service which is often used as a payment method in buying and selling forums or websites marketplace.

Under the auspices of PT Indonesia Payment Solution for almost four years of operation, InaPay managed to record 29.466 transactions from 25 thousand service users. had time to do service update for, especially in terms of features and security systems, InaPay's business actually slumped. And as of January 25, 2015 InaPay decided to no longer operating.

Lamido

Under the auspices of Rocket Internet, the online marketplace service Lamido was launched at the end of 2013. merchant. Having operated with a 50-member team, this startup led by Johan Antlov and Giacomo Ficari chose to close the service as of last March. Gradually, Lamido has merged its team and merchant partners into part of Lazada Indonesia.

Since its launch, Lamido is determined to able to compete with several existing players, such as Tokopedia and Berniaga (before joining OLX Indonesia), Tokopedia and Bukalapak. However, intense competition has made management choose to strengthen Lazada's e-commerce services so that they remain focused on maneuvering in an increasingly hot online landscape.

Paraplou (Asian Vela)

Launched as an e-commerce pioneer in Indonesia (established in January 2011) focusing on fashion products, Paraplou claiming to be a fashion site third largest in Indonesia. The startup, which is led by former Rocket Internet retainers Bede Moore and Susie Sugden, had received Series A funding of $1,5 million from Majuven.

However, as of October 24, 2015, the startup, previously named Vela Asia, decided to close its services. In his farewell speech, Paraplou revealed that the factors of market competition, internal finance and the difficulty of obtaining funding support were the main reasons for closing its operations.

Valadoo

This online travel service that offers various travel tour packages was established at the end of 2010. Had received investment from Wego along with pivot services, Valadoo was able to grow well when similar service providers were still quiet in the online scene. In August 2014 it merged with Burufly, but in fact Valadoo's business is still stuck. Finally as of 30 April 2015 Valadoo is official close the service.

One of the aspects revealed by Jaka Wiradisuria, CEO and Co-Founder of Valadoo, that his business did not survive due to unclear directions from the start, related to an immature business model. Differences in culture and expectations after the merger have also shaken business propositions, including in terms of the use of supporting technology. Currently Jaka decided to join Rome after confirming Valadoo karyawans employees not abandoned after closing the company.
